Hmm. Laura has had a Samsung P300 for nearly 2 years, and it continues to
function. Mined ewe, it's made of fucking stainless steel.

I'm a firm believer in cases. All my Nokias lived in their faux-leather
cases, and apart from cushioning shocks, the cases kept the buttons
clean and grit-free. The current Samsung slider has a high-tech clip-on
crystal case that shows signs of awful abuse (scratches, chips and
dings) but when popped out, the phone is immaculate. The case has got a
bit loose now, but still sacrifices itself during droppage, by spanging
    off and absorbing energy.

The finest moment came at a pool match, when I did a 'soap in the bath'
type grab-and-slide off triple, eventually launching the phone at a good
lick into the air. Apogee was a good eight feet up, and it crashed to
the parquet floor twelve feet from my feet - in three pieces. Phone,
and two halves of the case (which is in two pieces anyway). Zero damage
to the phone, chipped a corner off the case which required application
of a small file to remove the sharp edge. The eight quid for the case
was one of my better investments.

Just to be clear, these are cases that allow the use of the phone
    without removing them yes?

I remember that phase. The full on 'Kevin the teenager' phase is clearly
    imminent here.

Oh, yes. I CBA to dick around opening, or worse, removing a case before
being able to use the phone.

Have a google for "Crystal Case" ... here's one I found:

    Of sons

That's made me dig out old photos. Mine was so damn cute at that age.
    [1]
I'm about to head off to go drinking with mine. Though I think a trip
to Camden to buy him new boots is scheduled as well so they still suck
your money even after they've left home.

[1] Would it be very wrong to take one of said cute photos with me to
show to fellow party goers this evening?

    Ta.

My argument, however, is that if such a case is essential in 'normal'
use then why don't the manufacturers supply one with each instrument. I
can also see it being a bit tricky with touch screen jobs.

TBF, IME, the Samsung sliders seem to be exceptionally robust anyway.

Well, the packing to send it back to LG has arrived. The printout
accompanying it has an entry "Expected Warranty Claim: Yes", so I'll see
what happens. If they come back with a silly quote they can keep it and
then I'll dip my pen nib in vitriol to express my views. It probably
wont achieve anything but it will make me feel better. I haven't written
the kind of letter that often gets passed round the office for a laugh
since I wrote to the Chief Constable of the West Midlands Police and the
Prime Minister about my 'customer care' when trying to report having my
    car broken in to.

The bad news is that Orange shops are apparently independent franchises
so that route is almost certainly a waste of time other than a, "I shall
    take my custom elsewhere", flounce.

No doubt that's why this phone was made in China.

Although not a particularly "sexy" phone I have an old Nokia 5140 which
has a toughened bouncy case. It's been thrown at the wall and survived.
I have it as a stand-by for this reason.

Verging on a VoR statement. Not *all* customers though, but TBF probably
the vast majority targeted by something like the LG300.

I think that the two are probably intertwined.
Erm, technology is never going to settle down. Why do you think that?

As for robustness, I reckon the only way that'll happen is when
people start to think properly about the environment. And sadly, that
ain't gonna be any time soon.

    My bad.
Heh. Makes sense. For the mobile phone market though, although you do have
the two segments, manufacturers [1] aren't looking at it that way. I think
that they see the segments being quite lop-sided with those going for the
latest functionality, etc, being the much bigger segment. That segment is
targetted at the younger generation without a doubt.

If you search for 'basic' solid phones today, you're very limited in the choice
that you have. They're either designed for OAP's that can't get used to having
a wireless phone in their hands or for children at school, where mummy and
daddy don't want them to take the iPhone in. In the enterprise workspace, a
decent solid phone will cost you anything from £1500 upwards (But then again,
the requirements criteria isn't exactly the same).

You're quite right with the calculator analogy though because currently apart
from better performance or components, there hasn't been too much in the way
of leaps forward. Apple is a case point. Their phones do get better with each
version but they probably make most of their money on the iTunes store
    currently.

I think that we will see big leaps and bounds when things like batteries are
improved, electronic paper being more widely used, etc [2]. So really,
technology doesn't settle down, rather it slows down.

    [1] Most, at any rate.
[2] Nokia have some fascinating ideas with nano-technology.

Nope, it's slidey smooth. you just push it and it opens with a snap
(W595). Try some display models in the shop, and then collar the sales
    droid.

Grinding phones not good. Did you drop it anywhere gritty ?
