My LG didn't survive a pocket bath. Shame really, coz I liked that one.

Plausible, but then we weren't designed, were we.
Well it'll never get that far, but I'd be prepared to argue the point on
an each side to bear their own costs basis.
It was bought with the proceeds of the sale of an outgrown mountain
bike, but then that's not really his own money really, seeing as that
was a birthday present - or is it? He seems to think that way.

Quite, but then I suppose these new gizmos are effectively tiny TV sets.
Tiny TV sets, however, which should have been designed to cope with
    inevitable small shock events IMO.

Perhaps, but in the case of this phone it would probably have to be up
    to 'Great Egg Race' standards.

My Nokia 6210 went to hell and back with me. Including being bounced
off the road at high speed when I left it on the roof of the car.
    Still working, display still functional.

I think phones have got more fragile meself ..

My current Sony Ericcson slidey thing is also quite robust, but it
does have a great big (aftermarket) plastic shroud on it.

My then 8 year old middle daughter once asked me and her mum to buy her
a mobile phone. I asked her who she was going to call with it - if we
bought her one - she replied "only Gemma". Now Gemma was a nice kid who
lived all of 25 yards away over the road in the same close we lived in.
That weekend I bought Jess some new cheapie trainers and told her she
could walk over the road in them to speak to Gemma face to face - it
    didn't go down too well.

I don't think shouting "****" at a mobile phone is really considered
giving it a hard time, they're built to take more abuse than that.

    In communiqué
Inevitable I suppose, but why won't the manufacturers admit it and give
    a suitable 'health warning'.
Now you see my argument is that such protection shouldn't be needed for
such a minor incident. Or if it is, it should be incorporated in to the
phone or supplied with it as an accessory.

Nobody could expect an LG to be the Snapon equivalent of a phone, but I
should be entitled to at least say, Draper standards. As it is, perhaps
    they should be Poundland priced.

You want one of these (check the drop specs on the specification tab,
    which really are minimum specs):

    (or http://tinyurl.com/MotoMC70)

You can pick one up for under a grand.

Heh. I recall someone writing about walking down the street as two
teenagers walked the other way, both chatting into their mobiles. As
they passed, he realized that they were talking to each other.

"4 ft. drop to concrete, 6 drops per 6 sides over operating
temperature range; 5 ft. drop to concrete, 2 drops per 6 sides at
    ambient temperature of 73° F (23° C)"

So that's "drop and tumble" (sounds fun). Way beyond what I need for
    everyday use.
Nah, cheaper to buy a new phone every week ;-)

Seriously, all phones should give some kind of ruggedness
specification as above. Dropped a five times from 2 feet on to random
    side/corners would do me.

Does it make a grinding noise when it slides? I've got a new one and
it's ages since I had a slider and I don't remember them being this
    noisy before.

I actually feel that a gift given, unless conditions were part of the
giving process, becomes the entire property of the receiver of the
gift; theirs to use, abuse or dispose of as they desire.

Well, yes, between adults. Then, TBF, I suppose my parental, un-
voiced, implied conditions aren't worth the paper they aren't even not
    written on.

Damn, another major deal lost. :)
In an ideal world, you'd probably be right.

The problem is that we live in a consumer society. If you want phones
that resist a two foot drop, then you'll need to buy a decent case for
it. Saved my iPhone a couple of times, it has.

I have a horrible feeling that I have yet to experience that. The yoof

    present.
