My old Peugeot 'racing' bicycle has started to die [1] and I fancy a
'new' one. I've always lusted [2] after a Holdsworth road bike.

So cycling types, how much is this worth:

It's got a Brooks saddle, how fucking great is that!

[1] It was a skip rescue job 4 or so years ago.
[2] This lust in a bicycle context obviously.

    five pound tops
just old. sorry but that bike does'nt look to me to be one of
holdsworths' finest as much as a relic too many mass market coponents,
restore it at your cost and peril like any old vehicle it may be more
ek'spensive than it is worth to fix.

worste of all you will never be able to get the risk of sudden
catastroughic filure out of your mind wen you are rideing.

well, I've got an ex-Ace pushbike I want to sell.

It's a Dawes Galaxy tourer[1]. Worth about 150 quid, but you could have
it for less than that, I'd imagine.

    [1]531 frame & forks.
    Wienmann alloy hubs & rims.
14 spd, downtube shift, Shimano Exage front & rear derailleurs.
    Suntour chainset.
    Alloy pedals (with toeclips).
Dual-pivot brakes (unnamed, but very effective).
Wienmann 'touring' brake levers (with extra levers running along top
    tube of bars).
Alloy drop handlebars, with thick foam padding.
    Mudgards, rack, etc.

Catastrophic failure is not something I worry to much about. See my
    motorcycles passim.

My bicycles are usually skip rescue jobs so restore doesn't enter the
equation (unless oiling and pumping up tyres is now considered
    restoration).

I always liked the old 'Gentleman racer' type bikes and the in the
playground it either was a Chopper (which my Mum said were dangerous) or
a racer, which simply meant drop handlebars.

So dirt cheap is the verdict - a fiver does seem a bit low though - so
    how cheap is cheap?

Absolute tops, 20 quid. It looks like the entire drive train will
    need replacing.
Fucking painful if it wasn't you who broke it in.

I do see that :) many and short on a old bicycle are the paths to
    pain.
IMO an old english frame (doors, clord buller, holesworth etc) has a
quality of ride unssurpased by many modern bikes. especailly if it is
one of good mettle, but i would completely dismantle that one to balls
and grease and re'assembel it painsteakingly before i rid it anywhere

    but cheap.

    Not a lot.
    Just super!

But seriously, find out when your local police auctions are held and go
along and you could buy ten of those for a fiver.
