I have a few hundred WPD files (WordPerfect 5.1) and want to open them in
    Word 2003.

I have access to Word 2007 and Open Office if that helps.

How can I convert them painlessly and - importantly - free.

....might not be 5.1 - that was just a reflex after writing Wordperfect.
I nearly hit the home key twice too.

Word has a filter to automatically import Wordperfect files, just
install that via the setup program if it's not already on your pc, and
    forget about converting.

can't help you with batch conversion, but if you just need to open
    them:

File menu -> Open -> Files of type list -> select either WordPerfect
5.x or WordPerfect 6.x as necessary.

Open just to view or to edit?

If you have Word 2003 (which presumably you do as you want to use that
to open the .wpd files) try this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826174/en-us?spid=2530&sid=234

Seems to be a similar .wiz jobby in Word 2007.

<must try that on site tomorrow as it could be very useful for an
    archiving project>

Be warned that complex documents sometimes don't convert very well. OK
    for simple letters though.
