I thought Brazil was safe enough, certainly didn't seem anymore dangerous
    than a major European city.

It has to be said, I didn't wander about poverty stricken parts of Sao
Paulo looking like a tourist (the scene in Trainspotting with the US
tourist comes to mind), neither was I involved in any drug related
activity - which I suspect is dangerous in any part of the world.

Show me a country that is not "dangerous".

The other/next/previous is always more dangerous.

Wrong. A "gringo" is any foreigner. The word seems to be a corruption
    of "griego", which means "Greek".

That describes the Four-eyed Juicy Fruit's proclivities, but he
needn't worry unless the locals start calling him "culero", which
    means "bugger".

I came upon the very same things in the Phillipines. A country where our
money is worth, generally speaking, 5-10 times the value here. Large areas
of land segmented for building. Basic services laid in (5 years ago) but
only perhaps 1 in 20 sites actually built on. The land parcels all seemed
to be offered to me at rates I might expect in the UK and had to be bought
today because of the queue of local investors looking to snap it up.

    Aye *RIGHT*

Getting a local to make enquiries revealed a very different world. Like a
64 hectare coconut plantation making a decent (local) return, on the
    seafront, for £350k.

I think Paul's post explains it better, yes, it could well be I was
mistaken that the Mexican version of the word was used further south.

  8. ¿Qué? I see that in El Salvador it means queer, but everywhere else it
seems to mean skidmark (of the pants variety).

Perhaps you're thinking of "chapero" which means rent-boy.

Sodomita means bugger. There is not, as far as I know, a Spanish *verb*
    for bugger (cometer sodomía).

Anyway, who are you? Is your name really "."? I think you're a spy of
    some sort.

The only country I've visited where I felt at risk was Angola and
downtown Luanda isn't very high on anyone's list of holiday
    destinations.

ISTR it being fucking expensive to eat and drink as well as being
dangerous so I'll not be hurrying back.

  12. There are eight lifts in Pucon and about as many runs. Unimpressive.

That sounds about right for Swaziland. We did consider dropping down
from Kruger to Durban via Swaziland during our recent visit but being
a fool I wanted to go to Rorkes Drift and doing both would have meant
a lot more messing about so the idea went out of the window.

Oh yeah, I know. We'd skied at some other small resorts so were really
just looking to get the experience, IYSWIM, rather than having any
    expectations of brilliant skiing.
