You could quite easily google and see the opposite too, y'know. IMO, in
true Islam women are equals. Unfortunately in practised Islam, there
are different interpretations of the word "equality".
Of course, and that's Westernised societies for you.

  4. I meant to ask how you found the holiday. I was really creeped out
    last year.

I think that it could also be a cultural thing too. e.g. A lot (not
all) of restaurants I used to go to in Greece would have male waiters
only. In Turkey (officially secular) it was also the case.

In Spain, this is very common too in some of the better restaurants.
Some will only have Spanish waiters (no immigrants, etc) too.

  6. Agreed, but how often is any religion or belief system or philosophy
actually used for good? The mystics in any religion are let down by
the dogmatic doctrinal interpretations of the majority imo.
Same with all the Abrahamic religions.
Yes. <pulls blanket over head and goes and hibernates>

In general, women are visible pretty much everywhere. You just have to
    know where to look.

e.g. In Saudi, you have women-only sections in some of the banks. In
hospitals you have female nurses. In shopping centres, you'll have
    female assistants, etc.

It's not as bad as that (although I don't condone the general way of
life for women in some of the stricter muslim countries).

the hotel was lovely. weather mostly ok (windy for the 2nd half of the
    week).

the germs, however, were nasty. I've been back for 11 days and I'm
    still not right.

  12. Hong Kong? Not hugely warm but certainly not freezing either. It's odd
watching the HK Chinese being wrapped up in the coats when it's 15
degrees. There is a little bit of Christmas about but it is not
overweening. I imagine you might be interested in the cultural and
social feel of HK as well as the simply amazing scenery. There are no
issues about personal safety for men or women there.

I don't get your reference to the Far East being too far to go for seven
days. If you sleep properly the first night to kill the jetlag you can
adjust your body clock quickly enough.

I've done HK for the last 2 Christmases and had a pleasant break each
time. I'm off to Singapore this year to enjoy equatorial rainfall, 30
degree temperatures and a regimented society. Oh and the fantastic
cuisine, seaside and the gardens and anything else I trip across.

Japan is programmed in for next Easter to go and see the spring blossom.

Both. You're right, of course, but the hotel we stayed at last year
did special gala dinners on both nights.

Aurora borealis activity is correlated with the solar cycle - and peaks
every 11 year or so. Last peak was in 2001, so currently the activity is
at its lowest. Statistically, you could expect more frequent and intense
AB displays any year but now. That said, statistics do often not apply
    well to isolated events.

Never been to Iceland, but have heard several positive experiences.
Probably a more intense cultural experience than northern Sweden or
Finland. In Norway, the town Tromso is locally known as the "Paris of
the north" - to reflect cultural activities. But Iceland is in one way
within easier reach than the northern regions of Scandinavia - a single
flight. I would expect either alternative to be considered as expensive,
compared to trips in the opposite direction (unless you head for very
    luxurious carribean resorts).

So, I've kept myside of the bargain. You still need to start the book
and finish it, I want to reread it, after the 16 and a half out that
are left of that pile of 20.
