Why not just stay here and think of Christmas as a midwinter heathen
    festival like everybody else does?

  3. I didn't know you were a woman. Did you used to be someone else?

    Happens a lot around here.

There is a tradition of mid winter festivals which predate written
    records.

I have to confess that although a little OTT these days I prefer to
celebrate the reality of consumerism than someone else's imaginary
friend and in a perverse sense welcome what Xmas is becoming.

I like to think of Christmas as a culmination of very good advertising
    to the aspirational amongst us.

Unfortunately this year I've accidently taken a vow of poverty or as I
like to call it "maxed out credit cards" ;-).

  6. <holds hands up> It's a fair cop, I was tired, that was badly phrased.

It's based on one very unpleasant experience in Egypt last year.
However as a woman travelling alone, I don't want to be in countires
that, in their laws and culture, treat women as less than men.

Do you know any Islamic countires where this is not the case?

Hog, you think 3 strikes and someone should die, but you'd boycott for
whaling. Yeah, right, pull the other one.
If I was feeling environmentally friendly I would, however the fact
I'm flying really counts me out of the 'holier than thou' thing.
    I know. Suits my mood.
I considered Rome, my favourite city, but discounted it for vaious
    reasons.
What's she come up with so far?

stay home and sit in the dark.

The shortest day in Reykjavík is about 4 hours long in addition to
some twilight. How much daylight there actually is depends on the
weather, it can be pretty bright in snow and sunshine but if there is
no snow (there is a 50:50 chance of white christmas in Reykjavik) and
overcast and rainy there will not be much light.

  10. That's my take it on it.
I'm avoiding becoming more dumpy and I don't really drink these days.
Maybe I should go on a proper bender as advocated in 'The decadent
handbook for the modern libertine' which I'm enjoying and cringing at
    in equal measure.

Yes. There has to be somewhere for people who really don't want to
    hear about it surely?

  12. I'll still be celebrating Yule (any excuse for a large fire really),
then going away on either the Friday or Saturday.
    I refuse to celebrate consumerism.

    avoid.

Be careful of posting links to websites that contain spelling or grammatical
    errors with Sigvaldi around

"Hi there, I really think you should check your spellings on the Iceland
    page.
The name of the mountain on page 2 is "Skarðsheiði" and it is Skardsheidi in
    English.
The same with the site of the ancient parliament, it is not Pingievellir it
is "Þingvellir" or Thingvellir in English, the "Þ" letter is not the
equalient of the P. Seeing things like that on a web page such as yours is
deeply offending when it should be so easy to get these things right."

If the northern lights are getting your vote, try the north of Finland.
They *don't* kill whales! Otherwise, Morocco has a civilised blend of
Arabic and European influences. I've had happy times in Casabalanca and
Rabat. Not been inland, but Marrakech might be a good alternative.

Why? I mean, just because you hear about it doesn't mean you have to
take part. If we follow that logic I'd also like to see football-free
areas, for example, especially during the world cup. I'm sure loads of
people have their pet hates but don't expect to be pandered to as
    you're seeming to be wanting.

Not to be pedantic or anything, but women aren't treated as "less than
men", they're treated differently. It's only in western cultures where
it may seem as though they're treated less.
    I'd say the westernised ones.
