I tried two. Second one was quite good, but utterly unhinged.

Yes. I think you may be confusing 'Religion' with 'belief in god(s)'.
Or at least, failing to see that I'm certainly using it to include any
regular rituals that formed a focus of community, whether god-related
    or not.

Given that Buddhism is a religion without god(s) I can't really pick you
up on the first bit (BTW there is a very interesting Harvard Human
Rights Journal article on 'legal' definition of religion).

Ritual = Religion ? No, otherwise all compulsive obsessives have their
    own religion.

Regular rituals forming the focus of a community = religion. Tricky one
that. I get your point, but I can think of one or two examples of
regular formalised ceremonial behaviour (we are in danger of getting
embroiled in semantics) that are entirely secular.

Are traditional ceremonies a) always religious and b) necessarily a Bad
    Thing?

Only if we also include people whose fire long since died out and only
hang around to have protracted conversations about the "humerous" side
    of office life.

"*my* most memorable is prolly shagging an american bird in a swimming
pool, full of tequila (me, not the pool) at about midnight, at a lodge
near Cape Tribulation. Some people were playing volleyball at the other
    end of the pool."

    That the one?

    Or

"site of the worst shag of my life, with an ugly american, both pissed
on Tequila, in the swimming pool"

    Or maybe

"Frances, the american girl [1] I screwed in a swimming pool in
    Queensland
[1] so typically ignorant that she maintained that parts of the USA
(specifically Florida) were in the tropics."

    The choice is yours.

  16. <stays out of the library> Actually I have at least one book, possibly
two (it covers Anglo saxon beliefs but has some pre history
speculation), in the slowly diminishing pile to my left that is
    relevant to this discussion.
No, ritual does not equal religion. (but you knew that)
There's a whole sub thread here on the lack of cohesive societal and
community experiences and how people find meaning. But this is UKRM
after all (layer upon layer in that one)
    When does Logos become religion?

Not entirely sure I agree with that, um, have a Pinker lecture while I
    have a think

    http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/articles/media/2004_10_29_religion.htm

It depends on what you mean by 'significance'.
For me it is pretty much what Pete says there, though I don't have
SAD, I just plain don't like the lack of light, so it resonates with
me as 'yay, the sun's coming back'.

Why is marking an event that has resonance for you 'pseudo-religious
clap trap'? Surely there are some aspects of your life that you mark?
Well if you're going to go all socratical on me.
