  1. It always did, ime. I went to school with a girl whose father was the

  3. Very much so, but also very recently married, so I think you're out of luck.
I did say she was pretty.

I think the solstices, and in particular the winter solstice, are beyond
(or should that be before) religion in terms of significance to Homo
Sapiens. Given our modern existence they have lost some of their power,
but can you deny the importance to early Man of the 'turn of the year'?
Even with the knowledge to comprehend why the seasons cycle, and that
they will continue to do so (although their effects might be somewhat
modified by global warming), I still like to celebrate the shortest day.
The equinoxes should get more of a look in.

    I'll add:

Any use of psuedo accents and colloquilisms: "''owt", "d'ye ken", etc.
Especially when the poster isn't from the area but not restricted to
    them.

Eh? Just because it was early religion doesn't make it any less
    religious.
Well, it's clear that religions evolved to explain what ancient man
observed, but I'm not sure how, or why, you'd attach more or less
'significance' to any particular take on ancient religion.
Sounds like a load of pseudo-religious claptrap if I ever I heard it.

<resists temptation to go off googling for learned sources>

Does marking the solstices as something significant necessarily
constitute a religion? Stonehenge and the like certainly suggest that
such celebrations became part of some form of religion. I suspect
though, that early Man may have begun celebrating midwinter in the same
way as they probably marked significant life events - birth, death (even
pair bonding perhaps), without any shaman telling them to.

Now you will rightly argue that without an elder, wise man or shaman
with the 'knowledge' to identify the solstice days they would not be
able to. There you probably have me.
I don't. I attach significance to a fundamental feature of the nature of
the planet which has particular resonance with me as someone affected by
    S.A.D.

I thought it was being conserved in various labs around the world.
There was a debate a few months ago as to whether they should destroy
    the samples or not, IIRC.
