Quote from Peter Hook regarding 24 Hour Party People and Steve Coogan: "Manchester's biggest wanker played by Manchester's second biggest wanker".
He did a great deal to promote non-corporate, non-US-mainstream music in the seventies so I wouldn't celebrate too quickly. "The Way They Were" on UKRM-Nova is basically a compilation of his "So it Goes" Granada TV programme. It's from all about your era 78-81.
Look at the list of bands he was involved with. It would be remarkably short-sighted to write him off as only being the founder of the 'Madchester' thing. Without that, there would have been no Oasis vs Blur and all the sound-alikes of the time, which means no 'Brit Pop' etc - he had a direct influence over the makeup of much of the style of the top-40, even today.
This emotion is really beyond me. I can't think of anyone whose death would make me happy. Actually if I'm really honest I can't think of anyone who I wish 'bad things to happen to'[1]. I can think of plenty who I wish didn't have internet access but that's a completely different thing. [1] Excepting: - Lorry drivers in lane 2 doing 0.01mph more than the wagon in lane 1. - Car drivers taking insufficient observation. - Car drivers trying to show me how fast their car is. - Anyone who delays me in the slightest when I'm on the road (on bike or in car, makes no difference.) - Anyone who pushes in front of me in a queue (in car or on foot.) - Anyone involved with airport security. - Anyone that doesn't bend the rules/processes for me - Anyone who doesn't do what I ask them. - Uppity shop staff and waiters.
Joy Division plus I *think* he did a lot of promo work for the punk bands in the mid-late 70s re getting them on TV. Completely agree. Plus Oasis are louts and Blur were talented.
Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate Indeed. I can't think of anyone really who I'd like to see dead, but if you'd have asked me that yesterday my answer would have been "That Tony Wilson twat", but I'd have wanted it to be more drawn out and painful. Directly, he didn't have anything to do with either, really - but indirectly, in defining the scene and the movement.... I'll just put you down as an old git on this one ;-)

Hmm, not sure I agree with you but I'm afraid that I'm aware that prejudice blinds me. No matter how talented oasis are/were the fact I abhor what they are means I can't credit them with their dues. However having said all that I'm still sure that Damon Alburn is a better songwriter in the Kinks/Jam tradition.
