As if one were required ..

"According to the National Rifle Association, America's pro-guns
lobby, the people of the USA normally buy about 7 billion cartridges a
year (an average of 23 rounds per head). The past year has seen that
    figure jump to 9 billion."

"Gun fanciers, fearing a Democrat crackdown on every American's right
to pack heat, are clearing shelves at ammo shops and hoarding
    cartridges.

AP reports that the Remington Arms Company's factory in North Carolina
is now working around the clock trying to supply insatiable demand for
    rifle, pistol and shotgun cartridges."

Actually i reckon it might be safer. If people percieve they might not
get more ammo, they won't want to waste it.

I really don't see a problem with that at all. When we used to be 'allowed'
by our government to enjoy the pretty harmless hobby of target shooting, our
club members used to buy pretty large quantities of ammunition or components
(primers/powder/cases etc) to keep the costs down. Unlike the US, where
ammunition is so low in price it's effectively 'free', UK prices for factory
ammo were very high, typically £1-£1.50 per 'bang' for some pistol calibres
and much higher for exotic rifle calibres. Home loading kept costs down but
you had to buy large volumes of components. I used to keep ~2-3k rounds of
mixed ammunition at home with components for another 40-50k rounds in stock
at any one time. As I said, not excessive bearing in mind you can easily get
through 1500-2000 rounds in a morning on the pistol range.
We didn't have the luxury of the right to bear arms in a written consitution
though so we lost our sport to the media frenzy/political knee-jerk
    reactions. Bastards.

No matter how much spare time I've got right now, I can't be bothered
    with a gun thread.

But I might change my mind later...

"School" "marksmanship"? Now that's a bit close to the bone.

Hmmm. Can't think why you would want to argue that
position? You haven't presented any evidence for it
and such a jump in a single year seems extraordinarily
unlikely. That is a 29% increase by the way.

rec.guns people seem to think it a good idea to
buy as much ammo (and guns) as possibe just
in case government controls are introduced at
some time in the near future.

I guess since you state that additional sporting gun users
are "innocent" then you might be implying that people wanting
to carry more ammo stock are guilty. Of what?

I don't know why anyone really enjoys to go and play with things whose
original and only purpose is to cause serious injury and death. Unless
they are planning to inflict such things on others at some lager
stage. I can to an extent understand hunting type rifles but pistols
are designed to be a concealed weapon used against fellow humans.

Does it make you feel "hard" or something? Wanted to play with guns
without the hassle of joining the forces? Or do you think it will come
in useful assuming a future apocalypse type scenario?

Yep like any other skill that can get you skilled it's better to be
taught by an acutal instructor or teacher.

I was on my high school rifle team and went to the California state
small bore championships. My high school had an indoor rifle range. I
don't think there's ever been an accident or incident by anyone who's
ever shot there. But why would there? It is a place where the first
    thing taught is gun safety.

Funny, I'm pretty much on the entirely ban them end of the gun spectrum,
but your post reminded me rather strongly how much I used to enjoy
    fencing[1].

Yes, it is hugely dangerous and an almost completely uncivilized
wilderness. You would be well advised not to ever dare venturing over
here. You could very well be killed. You have been warned.

Just tell me what sort of choice did we get then eh? Hide them under the bed
and hope noone would notice or something? The police know just what you own
and where you keep it (these are conditions of the firearms certificate in
the UK). How are you meant to keep oyur guns when the govt change the law in
a totally arbitrary fashion as a knee jerk reaction to some looney running
    amok with an AK?
I was a competitive practical pistol/long range pistol shooter & homeloader
for >14yrs and enjoyed every minute of it. Now I have to travel to a
friend's range in switzerland to enjoy my sport.
Just enjoy yours while you can.

    It wasn't quite that simple.

At the time of the ban only about 1% of the population had legally owned
handguns, and the hysteria whipped up by the Daily Wail and The Sun
newspapers convinced the rest of the country that we were all fucking
nutters who were just waiting for an opportunity to shoot a few kids.

The Shooters Rights Association (IIRC) tried to put the case for the
defence, but only succeeded in pissing off the 'powers that were' who
then arrested the chairman for firearms offences.

It was a fucking stitch-up by politicians of all parties who thought
there were votes to be had in being tough on the gun nuts.
    You too, eh?
Without a friend in Switzerland, I gave up completely and took up golf.
Neither as relaxing nor as satisfying as precision pistol though, but
I suppose those who haven't done it wouldn't understand that.
