He took them to Osgiliath, which had been part of Gondor.

I thought that was on the (disputed) border crossing.

Now we're splitting hairs, or rivers. In any case, all of Ithilien had
previously been part of Gondor, and the city of Osgiliath had never
been taken by the Enemy or any of his servants.

This was a major deviation from the book, in any case, which
undermined the character of Faramir, who was not at any point tempted
to bring the hobbits and the ring back to Minas Tirith. He'd sworn not
to do so before he knew they had the ring, and was bound by that oath.

And men of Gondor do _not_ go back on their oath. This is why that
particular deviation is (IMHO) much more serious than the one where we
had Arwen at the crossing of the Bruinen, for example.

Middle Earth was built on honour and chivalry. Abandon that, and we
might as well have Elves raping and pillaging their victims' womenfolk.

Well, quite. She's a LARPer who uses words like 'filk'. LotR isn't so
much a novel as a manual for living.

I would be inclined to agree, on the basis that if it's bad, it's not
what I'd call literature. By which I'd say Tolkein isn't literature,
    it's cod-fantasy claptrap for kids.

    Pah. Amateur. I've read four.

One of them was actually quite readable. The other three were
hilariously bad, in a "as she looked at him, she felt a deep yearning to
have his babies" every other sentence stylee.

That, at least, might have been a **** sight more interesting.
