  1. I've cooled down now - I din't mean to go quite so far off the deep end
(OK so it was quite mild by UKRM standards but for me it was off the
    deep end..)

    Kiss kiss?[1]

  2. I blame slrn. And Linux. Windows would have done it properly.

    Challenging your assumptions, perhaps?

  4. I think you mean BDSM soft porn. The first was OK, got bored halfway
    through the second.

Latest fantasy ones I've read are the Robin Hobb Farseer and Tawny man
series, the first 3 were better than the last 3.

Maybe you should go back and reread it because it is in no way as you
describe. I think if you had more knowledge of Anglo saxon literature
and culture you might get more out of the depth and subtlely of his
    prose.

And I think you are *way* off the mark with your assessment of Phil.
Do I? I've not reread it for many years, but still think it is a
    classic.

  6. That aspect did put me off more than a little.. but it diminishes as
the series goes on and the latest one (written from someone elses
    perspective) contains none at all.

Her Godslayer series is worth reading - more conventional than the
    Kushiel though.
Robin Hobb is always well worth reading.

It's not entirely consistent. Where are the female dwarves?
What trade takes place? Where are the farming communities that can
feed the dwarves and elves in exchange for the gold, jewels and
hippie shit that they produce? How did the economy of Mordor work?
    So many questions remain unanswered!

  10. I didn't bother answering (except to laugh), for the simple reason that
it came from Champ. I don't like accusing folk of being superficial,
    but ....

  13. 'generally recognised' means ****-all. 'good', and 'bad' mean ****-all,
except as subjective judgements. You can't say 'I agree that is is
subjective', and then follow it with 'but'.

Bottom line (as they say): there _is_ no such thing as 'bad literature'.
In absolute terms, yes, they are. Just like in absolute terms, 'objects
have no size' (Alain). It is our appreciation of them that gives them
value, and it is comparison with other objects, that gives them size.
Whatever. Anyway, enough of this shite. Chabbat chalom to everyone.

  16. No, Champ. 'Adolescent' is posting cack like 'I'm not surprised that
Des likes it,' followed by some of the most (let's not beat around the
bush) _hilarious_ rubbish about 'shades of grey'.

What would you like me to post, whilst I'm _gutting_ myself laughing? A
    rant?

I don't resent you. If I had your looks, I'd probably be a shallow
    twat, too. Thank G-d that I don't.

Conflating various definitions of a word is a standard Des troll

I probably got to the end of FotR before giving up with the book. I
seem to remember wishing Tolkien would quit fucking waffling and get on
with the story. I appreciate that not everyone had my limited attention
span, but for me the whole thing was just boring.

I was quite surprised to find I enjoyed the films.
