True. I don't understand how anyone who appreciated the books could
    enjoy the films.
On the other hand, Brian Sibley's radio version had better pictures.

  2. Nah. Christophe Lambert's, erm ... 'Scottish' accent was just too
    realistic for me.

Then again, the books didn't have Miranda Otto.

  4. Yebbut loverrly as she was she wasn't right visually. Especially for
someone who formed the initial mental image at a very suggestable age in
    that of a young man.

Err, I'm not sure what that says about me then. To be fair, I've never
actually _counted_ the number of times I've read it, so it could be
    more or less tham that.

  10. And she's hot.
Yes, yes I know, I was trying to be subtle. Shocking I know.
    That's because there isn't one.
If there was one, which there isn't, it would be so far beyond pish
<wail> Wanna Know NOW. It's as bad as waiting to see if I'd got the
MSc place. Still getting to last 16 is pretty damn good. Of course
I've drunk so much coffee the chances of me sleeping this side of 5am
    are small.

des_just_passing_through secured a place in history by writing:
The books were written for bright adolescents Des. The Silmarillion was
aimed at the ultra-intellects who currently code in dark rooms, showering
last Tuesday week. They're not for grown-ups, more a rite of passage
    thing.

  12. Only fucking 1 in slightly less than 20, give us fucking break will you,
Come back when you are in the last two.

Isn't the normal procedure to notify by snail mail, or have times moved
on? In which case you can hardly expect a text message at this time of
    night.

[1] objective reasoning would be welcome, rather than just ''cos I said
    so'.

Champ secured a place in history by writing:
I loved them when I was 14. A few years later they held no interest for
me. I'm clearly missing something, but I have no understanding of the
appeal to grown men or women.

And don't even get me started on fucking Harry Potter - turgid,
pedestrian rubbish that can't even redeem itself with some quality of
style or construction. In the same camp as reality TV, the cult of
celebrity and every technical college calling itself a university when it
comes to the dumbing down of the nation.

  18. I haven't read them for years, as mentioned. Might dig 'em out this
I've never even opened a Harry Potter book, but do recall a thread about
this a while back when I got flamed ('plus ça change...') for stating
that despite the fact that I had no desire to read it, that didn't mean
that it was 'bad literature', for the simple reason that there is no
    such thing as 'bad literature'.

You won't see me disagreeing that it's shite, however.

But, as fishing attempts go, it was pretty uniminative. Predictable,
even. Surely you can do better?
