Optimizing a dual purpose single for the street

I'm looking for a commuting bike, and I got a recommendation that a
good 650 DP might be the ticket. I've always liked the idea of big
    singles, so I'm considering it.

If you were converting a used 650 single to spend the rest of its days
on pavement the first thing you'd do, I imagine, would be to get some
    good street rubber on it.

But what else? I'm thinking you'd want to replace the front sprocket
(and rear?) to get more street friendly ratios. Anything else?

I'd SuperMotard it with the right wheels and tires.

    Custom seat.

    Removable hard bags.

    Avon Gripsters work well.
Decent lights. Maybe heated grips (handguards help too) if it's cool.
    Possibly a small windshield.

I'd be tempted to keep the long-travel suspension. The greatest fun
of a dualsport is that it devours bumps which give sportbikes indigestion.
