Sawbridgeworth BMW should have a genuine BMW one, or you might try
    Maplins.

on balance, I've decided to get one of the Optimate "permanent
connection" leads, that ends in a connector that connects straight to
the "long bit" of the standard Optimate connection lead - 2 quid.

  3. Good thinking. You could buy a couple of "optimate end" ones and attach
them to other appliances so you can do other stuff while your battery
charges like GPS or whatever else has a temporary connection to your
    battery.

Hey, if you left the engine running, you could even use one of these:

That's exactly the thing I was talking about. Accumate plugs are smaller
than Optimate ones. Make sure you get the correct one. Personally I'd
just take my charger to HG and see what lead matched the plug on the
    charger.

Which is exactly what I was advising you to buy. Maybe we got our wires
    crossed (no pun intended)

yeah - until I looked at the Accumate web page, I didn't realise they
sold these - I thought I would have to buy a mini ciggie lighter socket
    and wire it in myself.

    thanks anyway.

  9. This is what I do. I have the special adaptor for the BMW but I have
attached the clips, cable and socket on the Honda and Kwak and simply
attach the Optimate as necessary when it needs a charge. About the only
thing I can do in terms of "repairing" a bike is deal with dud
    batteries.
There is the "fix to the battery on the bike" cable and also a "clip to
the battery when it is outside of the bike" cable with every new
Optimate. They changed the design of the connectors between Version 2
and Version 3 of the Optimate which can cause some complications.

Assuming it's the "seven shamurai", I'd just blame shitty kwak late-70s era
    electrics, then.

If it's the blade, well, obviously it's the alarm's fault ...

  12. They do - mine is mounted so that it comes out under the side of the
seat behind my legs. I put a bit of tape over the end to stop the road
grunge building up on the contacts but thats about it.

And it means I don't have to take the seat off to charge the battery.

Most of my bikes have one of those. Worth noting, the on-bike bit is
'shrouded male' and on the Guzzi has corroded to the extent of no longer
making a connection - that is after 8 odd years mind.

Leading me on to: I was recently lent (by a motorcycle shop) a set of
electrical connector cleaners, whether that's what they're for I don't
know, but it contained what appeared to be wire wool pipe cleaners,
minature chimney sweep brushes and the like.

    Where can I get some?

(I know I could always ask them but that would be missing the point).

Aha! Just noticed that they're weatherproofed the early ones I've got
    aren't, which explains something.

    Maplins.

Look for a PCB cleaning brush as the bristles are glass fibre, so less risk
of leaving conductive strands floating about in the connectors.
