Opinions, SV650 or CBR 600 F

  1. Hi,

I'm a new biker, and new to this newsgroup. Been riding for two and a
half months now. Currently have a 2006 CBF600 (Naked). I use it for
commuting and fun, and pretty much been on it everyday since I bought
it, in all types of weather. I've put about 3000 miles on the clock in
that time. Now I find myself very familiar with the bike (I wouldn't
be so bold as to say mastered) and I'm looking at getting something
else. Purely just to learn more and see what else is out there. I do a
fair amount of motorway riding unfortunately and therefore come to the
conclusion that something with a full fairing would be nice, something
a bit sportier who be nice too. Being a new rider my options are
limited though by inanse insurance premiums on anything with the word
sport or super in it. Thus I find myself looking at either SV650 or
    CBR 600 F.

So my question is really has any one here ridden all three? Any
recommendations? Should I stick with what I have? Will the less
powerful SV (on paper) still have enough punch to have fun on? Are the
above reasonably commuter friendly? An open ended question I know I'd
just like to get a feel for the general consensus out there and
perhaps some tips on what to look out for buying second hand.

    Thanks,

  4. :) Is this some "biker-ism" I'm missing? I'm 6' and male. Generally
able to man-handle my CBF 600 around.

    Oooo, wrong answer.

If you'd said "girl" then people would have been falling over
themselves to talk to you[1], offer you advice[2] and let you have
    shots on their bikes.

Now we're just going to treat you like newbie scum instead.

  15. Look on the bright side - it's still cheaper than being married or
    having a family ;)

I think you can get away with 2 bikes though - combine the commuter
and the winter hack into one bike, then get the funbike as your
    second.

I wonder if Cheryl would tolerate a second bike, rather hackish on the
    drive :D

    I own a '98 CBR600F and I also own a 05 model SV650S. both are very
forgiving bikes and dead comfortable, but the Honda is the sportier of
the two by a long way. You can commute on the CBR, and it doesn't get
at all cramped for my 5ft8, same goes for the SV.

When it comes to having fun, the CBR wins every time. It goes brakes
and handles far better than a standard SV, but, you have to thrash the
tits off the motor to have that fun because the engine is quite dull
when it's out of the power. On the flip side, the SV can be ridden very
briskly without having to cane the engine too hard because it makes
better torque lower down the rev range. The CBR is definitely the
faster of the two - my SV clock will read 145mph flat outand I know the
speedo lies, my CBR tops out at just a tad over 160 on the clock. I
know the speedo on the CBR lies, but it's definitely much faster than
the SV and accelerates better. Having built the CBR up to be the better
bike, I prefer to use the CBR on track and ride the SV on the road,
purely because the sound and feel of it give me a more involving
    experience.

I have ridden a CBF600 naked and thought it was a damn good bike for
what it was built to do. You'll definitely be making a smart move by
getting either a CBR or SV as your second big bike, they are both a
good stepping stone to something even better, but I'd choose the SV as
    a road bike.
