I need a bike to take me from now til this time next year, when I get my
full licence [1]. I want something that is cheap to buy, and after last
months escepades, it's going to have to be cheap to insure aswell.

What do people think of the SLR?

Seems to be cheap enough to pick up, low insurance group, and looks like
something I could keep hold of as a second bike or winter hack for when I
get the cash together for a decent bike next year.

Anything I should look out for, what sort price should I pay etc, and can
anyone think of a better bike for my criteria?

    TIA

[1] if I don't get banned in the mean time

Which part of that would be cheap to buy or insure?

    Very nice though :)

Oh, is that what he meant? Looks v. nice. Not sure it'd be suitable as
    a first bike though...

Well why don't you give us a clue what bike you're on about then? Some
german sites seem to list something with that name that's a re-styled
Honda Dommie, is that the one?

Seem to recall that these are made in Italy and are not up to normal Honda
build quality and hence rust like buggery.

I had a Honda NX650 Dominator as my first bike after passing my test.

    I loved it.

I had a brief ride on a demo SLR when they came out first. Performance
is very similar to the Dommie but the riding position is less
comfortable and the build quality (Italy not Japan) is variable.

I used mine mainly for riding to work in the Forest of Dean and on
backroads in the Wye Valley and Mid Wales. It was an ideal bike for
    this.

I once rode it up the M5 to Birmingham and soon after bought a fully
faired bike. I ran both until NU withdrew the rider policy.

From the website posted by CT, I note that the bike produces over 33bhp
[1] which means it is too powerful for someone with a restricted
    licence.

    [1] although not much

This I know, but I will either get it restricted, then take it off once I
have all the paperwork saying that it's restricted (like the ZZR), or does
anyone know if it fits into the power to weight ratio?
