  1. So, they'll be shelling out some compensation, then, having allowed their
    pilot free range ....

It's been interesting, (in a disturbing, macabre sort of way) to listen to
the little snippets of interviews with soldiers from various fronts over
the past couple of years, particularly the lower ranks.

US troops seem to be very aggresive. They're always talking in terms of
fighting; killing the enemy. I recall seeing one marine (I think: may
have been infantry) saying that that was all they did, as if anything but
actual fighting was beneath them. I wonder if this attitude may be
inclined to make them a bit trigger happy.

UK troops seem to have a slightly different attitude: more of
professionals doing a job which may include some fighting. Perhaps this
is because they are expected to take on the sort of non-combat duteis at
home which in the USA are handled by the National Guard. e.g. Covering
during the fire-fighters' strike; doing the nasty stuff during the foot
    and mouth epidemic.

I was also quite disappointed listening to an American officer on TV
recently - I think he was a major - using just the sort of language to
inflame talk of crusades: "fighting for God", "with God on our side" and
crap like that. Don't they have any understanding of the situation? Or
failing that, can't their commanders insturct them to for fucks sake not
    mention religion to reporters?

Maybe UK troops just have better PR skills.

I read something some time ago about how US troops were trained for big
battles and not really a lot besides. Hence the surfeit of gung-ho bullshit
    they seem to be fed.
If we needed cannon fodder, we'd bring back National Service...
They're proud of it: they're from a nation composed (to be fair, /partly/)
of religious nutters, led by a President if similar stripe. Why should they
    cover it up?
    Different programming.

We were trained to be aggressive, very aggressive. Recon by fire[1] was
SOP. It was "kill the commies" I'm sure it's the same or worse with the
only change being "towel-head" for commie.
This could very well be the case.
With bush as the commander in chief this will not happen. There was a
General in uniform speaking at a church function. He said, "This was
God's war" are we would fight to the end.
Or a slightly different outlook on life.

[1] shoot the **** out of everything.

  7. but the whole world is against us and our lovely President Bush.
Therefore we can shot anyone we like.
But they are fighting to save the free world goddammit.
We must kill the evil doers - it is God's command and we must obey
    unswervingly.

Just recall the American General character with 20 inch wide lapels that
Kenny Everett used to portray - "we're going to bomb the bastards". Says
    it all for me.

Things have changed, we used to have to clean the latrines ourselves and
do KP too - at least stateside. In Germany we had cleaners come in. We
did squadron stuff like CQ and provided an NCO for messcheck once and a
    while.

[snip other stuff which I agree with]
I find myself trying not to laugh here. To me, this is the Typical
British Response. "Right lads, they've had their turn. "Let's show them
how it done all proper like".

    [snip more stuff]
This has gotten us into much trouble. The Iran hostage rescue comes to
mind as one. All this power and might and it turned into a giant cluster
    ****.
    I subscribe to this too.

  13. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Part of an interview with a US Marine Col this morning had him saying
somehing along the lines of "... our enemy is Satan and we're fighting
him here...". The thought, 'Holy shit, now just wait a minute, you
fucking redneck bastard.', entered my head.

****'s sake, if that's the calibre of the military leadership over
there, it's hardly any surprise the US troops aren't making any friends.

It's an *incredibly* inflamatory remark. The rational response would be
to remove him from duty imediately. That sort of political naivety should
not be tolerated in an officer. Immense political capital has been made
of Bush's stupid crusade remarks. The US/UK forces in Iraq are supposed
to be freeing the country for it's people,[1] most of whom are Muslims of
one sort or another and understandably disturbed by the idea of a
    Christian crusade.

[1] I think WMD went out the window some time ago, so we're liberators now.

  17. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Verdigris"
The Blair BC did the next best thing and cut the remark from the noon
