    Hi,

Just completed a couple of weeks in the Quantocks where I have been
bouncing along single-track lanes on my Kawasaki Z750 (not ideal for
    the task).

Got back home to discover that the end-cap was missing from one side
    of the swingarm

See here for a piccy of the bit I'm missing
    http://www.kawasaki.co.uk/product.asp?Id=B630EC044A&SId=3400C879DDF&S=51

Seems to me that the jiggling had just worked the nut loose - perhaps
it wasn't tightended property when the chain was tightened.

I'm assuming that the function of this part is just to look nice and
keep crap out of the swingarm.
So it might be a good idea to replace it, but it's not urgent.

    Any thoughts?

It is fairly urgent, and I would counsel against riding the bike whilst it
is absent. Can't actually think why, other than it stops the axle moving
and it is impossible to get an accurate chain adjustment.

Yeah, see above. Personally, I wouldn't ride it until the endplate and nut
had been replaced. Something is niggling me about it and I can't quite pin
    it down.
