Oops! Have I bought a dodgy bike!?

I finally got the logbook through for the SRX today.
I bought it from a well known dealer in Croydon on 11th September, where it
was advertised as a '94 SRX600 grey import.
    It's a 1JK model.
But there's a couple of discrepancies on the logbook:
    1. The logbook says it's silver. Now, I may be colour-blind, but I know a
jet black motorcycle when I see one (no evidence of a
    colour-changing respray either).
    2. Engine number listed as 'Not known' - no real problem (I don't think so,
anyway), as 1JK models don't have a stamped engine number.
    3. Cylinder capacity recorded as 600cc. US spec SRX's are 599cc, all others
are 608cc, which this clearly has embossed on the base of the
    barrel.
    4. (And here's the worrying part!)
    Date of first registration: 01/06/2003
Date of first registration in the UK: 01/06/2003
    Declared manufactured 1988!!
    But it's supposed to be a 1994 L reg!
And isn't it supposedly illegal to make a vehicle appear to be newer
    than it actually is?
    Am I in the sh*t?

    Perhaps.

    1. Go back to the dealer you bought it from and request clarification
as to the discrepancies and either get a refund and return the bike,
or settle on a sensible figure for what it really is and take some
    dosh home with you.

    2. Sort yourself a sigsep.

    Then all will be well.

  3. The logbook for my grey import CBR, which I'm looking at now says 'Date
of first registration 05/09/2003'; this also the date it was first
registered in the UK. Like you the engine number is unknown and it was
    declared manufacturedd in may 1990.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. My guess is that "first
registration" means just that, first registered in the UK.

You wouldn't want to be riding round with a foreign number plate on now,
    would you?

FWIW, my bike has an age related plate on it, so despite being
registered last year, it is actually wearing a 'G' plate.

Just one thing missing here what does the frame number say? Does it
correspond to the V5? If in doubt follow Pip's advice

  5. That's ok.
But that's a bit off. Mind you, it might have spent 6 years in a crate
before being put on the road in Japan or wherever; so, if in fact it's
actually first reg'd '94 in its country of origin that would account for
    the discrepancy

Ok , so thats the Japanese twin shock bike then
Thats just someone being lazy when sending off the V5.
My 400 was recorded as being exactly 400 so I had it amended to 399
I thought that both the japanese 4 and 6 had changed over to the nicer
    looking monoshock frame by then.
I know my 93k bike was the newer design , and I'm pretty sure the larger
model was as well (the brochure on srx600.net would seem to agree)
    It certainly needs further investigation

  7. Easily remedied, but any change of colour must be recorded on the
    logbook. Legal requirement.
    That's not a real hassle.

    Yep, OK, grey import....
A hell of a lot of bikes hang around unsold for years - right now you
can get 2001 model Ducatis from some dealers. Six years is a long time,
but then I remember in the mid- to late 1980s when Honda found a dozen
or so brand new CX500s in a warehouse. They'd just sort of lost them!

Check the chassis number agaiunst the log book. Very, very carefully.

If that's OK, then it's just slipshod registering by the dealer. If
there is any, and I mean *any* discrepancy in the chassis number
records, throw it back at them.

The only part that really concerns me is the fact it's an '88 bike on a '94
plate. I always thought that you couldn't put a newer 'plate on an older
    vehicle?
I'm not at all bothered that it's an '88, as SRX's sell on condition, not
age, so it's not as if I've paid over the top or anything.
