I had to get a CPU for one of my customer machines back to the office and got
the courier company to sort it out. I should have told them that the CPU (with
    its box) was about 9" x 2'6" x 2'6".

Poor bugger's just turned up on a 125...

I think you mean 2 ft 6 inches. I've taken more stuff on less bike
    before.

You should have had a pizza delivery guy come for it on a scooter.

And the machine's only about 5 years old. This meaty server costs in
    the region of $1,000,000.

    It's a Stratus Continuum 7100 model.

The processor maybe, not the complete unit.

  10. ...and? I've just brought a microwave oven back from Curry's on the
DT. Followed closely by a 50 l bag of compost from the garden centre.

    Dinner's gonna be lovely tonight!

  13. Just thinking it ironic that something that slow was once
so expensive (a bit like my paying CHF17,000 for a 500 MHz Alpha that
my £1700 laptop probably runs rings around nowadays).

Heh, very true. The newer models that run on Intel architecture are
half the size (if you're not using X25) and about 2/3 the price. But
anything between 4 - 10 times faster than the 1229. The thing is
customers pay for the OS, just as much as the hardware, hence the price.

The one thing that the company I work for has got going for it and
that's a very loyal customer base. Mickey Mouse in France just changed
their two 1229's for V200's recently, as they won't go for anything
    else.

We've still got customers running old XA/R's, XA2000's, etc in the
field. They're just so robust, that customers don't want to change
them. Even if they do run at the speed of a ZX Spectrum.
