Spent most of this week in a delightful little northern town near Oldham,
    called Chadderton.

    What a dump.

Well I like it up here and it's not compulsary to drink shandy, like it is
    for southerners.

It could have been a lot worse - Todmorden for example.

Never been there (or anywhere else up north either), but it sounds grim.

The whole experience has depressed me.

Depends where you go. I took the bike to work yesterday and was in a
great mood all day after riding in through green hilly countryside, and
looking forward to the same on the way back.

The only thing that slightly spoiled the whole experience was an
incident in a section of double white lines. I was making progress
along this nice wide road, peeled into a gentle left and set up for the
approaching tighter right. Got round the bend to find a Vectra on my
side of the road overtaking. Managed to swerve round him and carry on,
thinking "jesus, that could've hurt". Pondered whether to take it easy
for a bit, but decided to make use of the extra adrenaline and carried
on. Made up for that by doing a kd lap of a new but muddy roundabout.
That felt odd, but nicely silly.

All that in mind, don't go through Darwen. The only reason for it
being there appears to be to play host to "Pip's Pantry", although I've
not dared stop long enough to find out what's available.

There are some nice roads around Todmorden. Pretty, too.

The only thing I know about Darwen is there is a paint factory there.

    Says it all I guess.

I have friends who live there. It's a lively place on a pub crawl on
friday nights. Ditto Blacknburn. Lots of biker rock night type venues,
good real ale and plenty of lether and lace to gawp at :)
