Heh, nah, they were two different mobile units for two different forces.

They're probably not speed cameras. I would say it's ANPR cameras checking
    your car is taxed/not stolen.

They've done the same thing on and off here on the two main approaches into
Bristol. I think we had one of the pilot schemes last summer. I remember at
the time that they had something like five pursuit cars/motorbikes at the
top of the M32 and they literally never stopped pulling people over. Some
horrific figure like one in 10 cars was either not taxed/insured or stolen.

The funniest one though was the police chasing a stolen car, which then
crashed into an Audi at a junction. Not only was the passenger in the first
car a jail escapee, but so was the passenger in the Audi that they hit. The
Audi driver was wanted for robberies in two counties. Class!

You weren't in the roadworks around J44, were you? Only that's posted
as a 50 at the moment; there was a cop car on the bridge on Sunday
afternoon, plod standing over it with a laser aimed at the M6. There
are also bridge works on in that area; workmen have been seen using
theodolites etc. so I can't give you a definitive answer, I'm afraid.
    Good luck...

Kraggash emerged from their own little world to say

That's my view too. It's surely the only reason that lane 1 would be
    monitored?

For speed monitoring purposes, in SE Wales, the cameras are inside vans and
manned. They sit in the fuckers like some gunner in the tail of a
Lancaster. I'm sure the sad cunts go "dagga, dagga, dagga" as they press
    the button.

I think they may have got me about 5 days ago in M4 roadworks when I was
    late...

Well, I saw them and braked but maybe not soon enough.

Several times recently when I've gone over the Severn Bridge, I have been
alerted to the presence of the "Talivan" on the bridge before the toll
booth, by means of dozens of vehicles in the other lane all flashing their
lights like fucking loonies. For which I was very grateful :)

I've seen them, on a swelteringly hot day, in a lay-by on the A38 near
Rudgeway, staring morosely out at a 2mph all-day traffic jam. Heh.

I was under the impression - from a reliable source but I can't remember
who - that the operators tend to turn off the road tax flag on ANPR
monitoring as it swamps the vehicles they're really after: stolen, write
offs and those who may wish to help with enquiries.

I must confess to doing this in my best Kenneth Moore impression as I
overtook, on the Guzzi, a formation of UKRMers as I tried to catch up
with the 'FOT that had left without me.

Arse. It could have even been an impression of Christopher Plummer
although I was a bit bandy legged after the thrash up from the south
    coast.

Having just updated the speed camera database on the GPS I'm thinking
of purchasing a spare external warnings speaker for when this one wears
    out.
