Online vehicle tax

  1. An absolute doddle :)

My reminder (for 30/09/06 expiry) just arrived a couple of hours ago -
hand delivered not by the postman, but by the person from the wrong
address the postman delivered it to. Obviously from quite some distance
away as he had to drive here - thanks for taking the trouble who ever
    you were.

So I tried my first renewal at www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisc

....An absolute doddle, beats queuing in the post office.

Just type in the reference number on the renewal form, click on 6 or 12
months, type in CC details, no need for the insurance policy, no need
for the MOT -system has direct access to those. It can even email you
    to confirm the transaction.

It is a shame the PO is so disfunctional.

It's obviously the season for it, as I've just done mine too. I guess
lots of people buy new bikes in September when dealers are more eager to
    please.

My only complaint would be the surcharge for paying by credit card,
but other than that it's a piece of piss to use.

In what way is the PO not working normally?

AFAIR, that's always been the case even at the PO counter; as you
shouldn't be able to pay tax on credit or somesuch.

I appreciate I may be unwittingly involved in a clever little joke (which
I doubt) but the question is "What's the problem with the PO and how has
it changed from the existing system of check docs, pay money and get tax
    disk?"

So how does that make it dysfunctional?

And what is the alternative to the queue system?

More Post Offices would spread the load and reduce the need for the
    queueing system.

It may have been better if he'd pointed this out - coupled with the Royal
Mail Group being forced to account its three groups separately (in
    preparation for privatisation).

This removes the cross subsidy which can keep the unprofitable offices
(and usually socially important) open which then places a greater strain
on the existing ones. Longer queues and more dissatisfaction aside the
collapse of social provision in deprived urban and rural areas.

This *is* dysfunctional but hey ho at least the delivery side makes a fat
    fucking profit.

Well, you can do that for sure. Pretty sure someone covered that. As
for queuing, come to a country where they don't understand the concept
and see how annoying it is.

Yeah but there's always going to be queuing in the real world. And the
line of cattle being led around those mobile barriers is less annoying
than finding you're in the line of people who each have to fill out
forms instead of buying a stamp or insanely asking for a pound of mince.

You can't do it 'for sure'. If you haven't yet got a computerized MOT,
you don't get a reference number on the tax reminder so you need the V5C
to do it online. I still can't find my V5C....

Do you mean "a bit too simple for them to grasp" meaning that an
intellect could be so great as to overlook a trivial detail? Or is it
    more nonsensical baby-speak?

Hehe MOT. Sorry I forgot about those. Haven't had a bike that old since
    1985.
