    <pikey mode = on>

Argos - cheap and cheerful, but our pine-framed bed came from them about
6 years ago and there's nothing wrong with it. Cost pennies with free
    and _very_ quick delivery.

Come on, if you want to be *really* pikey, go for Argos!
There's also one in Milton Keynes.

The trouble with Ikea is actually having to shop there. I've visited Ikea
three times (Leeds once, that one on the N Circular twice) and never yet
actually bought anything, cos they've never got what you want and the way
they structure the store is enough to get you to walk out in frustration
    anyway.

That said, when I was living in Oslo my entire apartment was kitted out from
Ikea and the stuff was OK, not good, just OK. Doesn't really cope too
brilliantly with the "kick test" though IME.

Having recently done the "MDF boxen" trick myself I can recommend B&Q for
the carcasses, doors, and handles, then Wickes for solid wood worktops, end
panels, and plinths (you'll beed to be a bit handy in the carpentry stakes,
or pay somebody who is). I know that sounds like kitchen stuff (well it is)
but in this case they went into my study and my sitting room, made a very
nice job of it too, all suitably stained and varnished... much nicer than
    Ikea stuff.

Heh, they sell a bed called 'Hawkwind'... that's funny :) (Well it made
    me laugh).
Come to think of it, we need a new bed too... the one we've got is only a
few months old, but it's only 4'6" wide and being a bit of a big **** I
(well, we) need more space than that really. Anybody interested in buying a
2nd hand but nearly new bed if we do buy a new one?

  8. To be fair, it's not actually meant to. I've got some shelves from
B&Q that have been in (counts) 5 houses now, and are not nearly as
steady as they used to be. They are on the "just about okay" level
    at the minute...

Yeah, the Ivar shelves I've got are great value, look nice, are
modular. The uplighter standard lamp gets carted in and out of the
garden all summer, is never cleaned and always works. The kitchen
cutlery has lasted for years. I like IKEA stuff.
My sofa is an IKEA Klippan. I bought it off a mate in 1995 - they'd
had it since 1980 or so. I put a new cover on it this year (IKEA still
make covers for it - or did until recently. It's as firm and comfy as
it ever was. I reckon I'd trust them for a sofa again.

Problem in the UK is that they'll only deliver what they've got at the
time. Unless they've changed since five years ago it's impossible to
place an order for a whole bunch of stuff (from the same range,
fitting together, like) and have it all delivered when it comes into
    stock.

That really pissed me off, so I ended up at Habitat, IIRC.

I didn't know Argos did furniture. I've only been in Argos once in the
last few years, because they were selling Gamecubes rediculously
    cheap.
    So there is.

I don't think there's a drinking establishment in London where you
couldn't find a website that said it was shit.

I did the new kitchen thing a year or so ago. Surprisingly, MFI
(Hygena) were the best cost/quality compromise I could find.
