Online banking scam

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Power Grainger, Oct 28, 2003.

  1. Vaguely relevant to the earlier banking thread, but also of use if
you've got your own secure sites, I guess:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/33598.html

My boss just 'tested' me to see if I could 'spot the dodgy URL'... I
passed, as it was not exactly difficult to see that the URL looked
like a dodgy version of our site, but still, worth publcizing for you
    non-Register-readers.

I got one of those yesterday. It does look like a valid URL at first glance
so I wonder how many people will be fooled into giving out their bank
    details.

  3. It seems to have persuaded some banks to remove their online banking
facility for at least a few hours if not a day or two, so I guess
quite a few people have been hit/are at risk.

I've not seen any of the actual emails though.

But can you spot the dodgy biker?

That was quite interesting. I actually didn't know about the '@' thing
    in URLs.

  7. I am perpetually amazed with what people can achieve with computers.
It's almost as if you can do anything in binary that you can do in
    real life!!

Of the 10 people that understand binary, I'm the 0 that doesn't.

    Wrong,

"There are 10 types of people who understand binary, those who do, and
    those who don't".

Heh, you can't be the 0 that doesn't. You can't be an 0, not even in
    binary.

What is apparent is that of the 10 people in this discussion, you're the
one who doesn't get binary. Oh, and BEn has messed up the quote, so
perhaps that bakes 10 people tout of 11.

  15. Anyway, an alternative would be "there is 1 type of person in the
world; those that index like C, and those that don't."

Mines the coat with the wearable computer on it, thanks.

But did you know, that if you use binary, you can count all the way to
    1024 on your fingers?

    ^^^^^ ^^^^1
    ^^^^^ ^^^1^
    ^^^^^ ^^^11

    and so on....

This way, The standard two fingers = 6 and the slightly ruder one = 4
    (if on the right hand)

I've had a number from Barclays this last week or so. I've binned
them so I can't tell you exactly what was on them, but it sort of
looks plausale. Except I already a) know there's a scam about and b)
know never to divulge my passwords, etc even over the phone.

It was interesting to learn about the @ in urls though. That also
explained what I could use them for on my Hosted Webspace (1&1 and I
can have a number of "@" addresses and I didn't know why till now)

I bit more ammo for the Mr Smug Git in the Pub I think.

  18. As have I.
And for me, c) I don't have an account with Barclays. Bit of
    a give-away that one.

I wondered if it was a blanket scam or if they had a list of
"customers". Blanket scam it is, unlike my viagra pers^h^h^h^h
    bugger...

  20. Can you imagine the confidence hit if Barclays sent out something
    the following:

    "Dear valued customer,
Last night our online banking service was hacked by some
l33t hax0rs. They did not take any money, or alter balances,
but did get a complete list of our online customers. It
has come to our attention that our customers are being
targetted by a false "update" email. Please ignore that
    message."

    Would really inspire confidence that...

    heh.
