I appear to have a working clutch! [1]

    <does "Numa Numa" dance> :)

If anything, it feels a little heavy.

No driveline slop from the new shaft, either.

Michelin radial rear may take some getting used to, though.

    <does "Numa Numa" dance again>

[1] apologies to residents of E14 for the last ten minutes.

The mental picture of a larger than average person doing a strange dance not
far from Canary Wharf at 8 in the evening conjures up thoughts of warnings
being issued for earthquakes and evacuation of entire office blocks !

  3. DOH, mine is still slipping. Is it common for the ZX9R-C1 clutch to start
    slipping at 18k?

I used BT45s for over 40k on my FJ1100 and then picked up a *very* cheap set
of Avon Azarros. I''m now on my second set of these and I'll have to
disagree with the FJ club on this issue. I'll never go back to BT45s, ever,
ever. The FJ is not exactly a nimble beast, but I can chuck it around all
over the place on the radials with much more confidence now than I ever
could on the BTs. (My current commute is a 50 mile each way mix of fast A
roads and cracking country lanes/B roads).
    Just my tuppence worth.

I'd be more worried about valve float at those kind of revs.

The Big Honda Book of Fables and Fibs said exactly the same.

    I diddit wivva paintbrush.

    All nineteen of 'em.

Of course, when you clamp it in the vice, to re-fit the spring, it
oozes out all over the shop.

I'm shocked that the rev counter goes that high. Try keeping it under

As I mentioned, when I had the old ones apart, some of them were "dry"
in patches. Or seemed it. Could this have been the root of the problem
    all along?

One other thing I've picked up - 97/98 GL1500s have different clutch
lifting mechanisms to those either before, or after.

The 99-01 models use the "old" version. Suspicious?

  13. The funny thing is it started when I changed the oil. It did it in
France most of the time. But flat out on the way home it gripped again.
I guess it's duw to the viscosity of the oil when the motor gets really
    warm.

  14. You may be onto something here. Did you use a fully synthetic car oil,
or a bike oil? And what grade. I've known more than one bike that
slipped on 20/50 (which wasn't the right grade for the machine) until it
    was warmed up.

Is Motul 5100 Ester OK to use in the ZX9R?

    Been to Hein Gericke?

I've used it in all of my bikes over the past few years, so I don't see

any reason why not. It's a semi-synth 10W/40 oil, as recommended by
    Kawasaki.

I was told to use fully synth after the first 1,500 miles, but I guess
all good quality oils are pretty much of a muchness. Although it didn't

need a single shim change in 35,000 miles ...

    ... and I still do.

I have spent the entire day overtaking stuff, simply because I could.

A brief trundle around the SE was a good way to spend a day in mild
    sunshine.

Set off after dropping madam at work, and headed off to Broadstairs,
    like you do.

A2/M2 was despatched with ease, and was used to test the previous
Achilles' Heel: the slippy clutch on uphill overtakes. Not a hint of
    it.

There was a brief shower as I passed Manston, but it soon passed, and
Mr Crampton's water tower was easily located.

From there, back up the A299, then a little cross-country jaunt down
the A28 to Northiam. Through Battle, then a diversion due to bridge
work led me onto the coast at Pevensey. Up over Beachy Head (not
literally) and down into Friston, to get a piccie of the Tapsel Gate
    at thechurch.

Landmark #3 for the day was at Shoreham. Piece of cake - straight
along the A259, keep the sea on left. Simple.

So why was the GPS insisting that I should turn right at every
    junction, then?

That would be so I could get on the A27, and save ages, I guess.
Perhaps I should give it a little more credit, sometimes.

That Roedean School's a bit imposing, isn't it?

Anyway, after fighting along the coast, I cut inland and along one
junction of the A27 before visiting the airport, to get a piccie of
    the War memorial there.

A drink, and a Topic bar later, I was off to Surrey.

Merstham, site of the first public railway in the world. Okay, it was
horse-drawn, but it was still on rails.

I couldn't find the site at first, and asked an old fellow in an RAF
blazer if he knew where it was. It turned out he needed to walk past
it on his way home, so off we went, me riding the Wing at a gentle
walking pace. As we made our way, the old chap told me he'd just been
off for a squadron reunion over the bank holiday weekend.

I checked his blazer badge, and, on reflection, foolishly said "35
Sqdn, isn't that the Pathfinder force?"

His eyes lit up, and I was regaled with many tales of derring-do, such
as Halifaxes dropping mines on the Tirpitz, etc.

About an hour later, he was in desperate need for a pee, so repaired
to the pub across the road. Sensing an opening, I wished him well, and
    took my photo and scarpered.

Final landmark was the Churchill statue on the Green in Westerham,
then up the A21/A20 and home.

The clutch didn't slip once - even under *extreme* provocation.

That awful rumbling's gone away - new drive shaft.

I'm glad I wear specs, or that bird shit would have gone right in my
    eye.

All clue dropping has been thoroughly kiboshed this year, on pain of
    disqualification.

I shall have to temper my reports accordingly.

All photos will be posted at the end.
