I'm not going to bid though I want it badly. Looks as if it deserves to
    make serious money.

What do you think, 3 or 4 grand?

    I can't see it making 4k. I think a perfect RD400 is still a better
bet, both as a rider and a collector. £2750?

That front mudguard is a pattern part though, innit? Shouldn't it have
    mudguard stays on?
And I think the top outer fins of the head should be a silver colour.

    Wossat on the rear light?

    I assume it's a muzzle.

Is it supposed to be original? I don't know a lot about old Yam twins, but
I suspect they didn't come out of the factory dripping with Allen bolts.
The dome nuts on the front caliper seem somehow wrong, as does the braided
steel brake line and the R-clip on the rear axle.

I have a very vague idea that it's just reed valves, but ICBW...

Was it not the tube that went to an empty plastic bottle - for want of a
better description - between the carbs and reeds?

  10. In uk.rec.motorcycles.classic, mb belched forth and ejected the
    following:
The front disc looks like it's done more than the suggested 235 miles as
    well.

1972 marked the year when Yamaha first produced engines with reed
valves, called Torque Induction. This system helped deliver more
low-end power and quicker engine response over the entire RPM range. "

and thank **** they did!!)

The 350 doesn't seem to be making big money after all. I guess the
better rideability and spares situation for the RD's marks them above.

  14. Wasn't that their capacative-discharge ignition (CDI), perhaps
fuelled by a high-voltage coil rather than the normal automotive DC-DC
    inverter?

Helmholtz resonator on the inlet stub. Not very effective outside a fairly
    narrow rev range.

    Read about it here.

    http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/HelmholtzResonator.html

    Neat idea though.

A Helmholtz resonator or something of that ilk, possibly.

ISTR Honda put something similar onto the NS400R exhausts instead of
    powervalves.

  18. The RXS100 is redlined at 9k, IIRC, and revs all the way there. It's a
cracking little engine, but if you think the power runs out at 6500rpm,
then there's something wrong with your bike.

It certainly starts producing power at about 4500-5000rpm, but it goes
on a helluva lot further than you seem to think.

Correct, it should. The unstayed mudguard came in with the RD250/400C.

Correct, and the edges of the barrel fins should be picked out in plain
    alloy too.
The bike is a US spec model, the muzzle was an optional part offered by
Yamaha America for owners living in dirt track road areas. It wasn't a
Japanese made item from what I can make out.
They had them in certain places, but not stainless steel ones.
The dome nuts are correct, but the braided line and R clip aren't.
