  1. I do so miss the Blue Collar Canteen (wearing of jackets forbidden) at
the Bank of England. Unfortunately I am constrained by the official
secrets act from telling you anything other than our group would do
"Luncheon Meetings" there on a thursday and the Chef (Who we called
Chef) who had bugger all to do would present us with a choice of 5 menus
on Monday. All for the price of a cuppa and a bacon butty in the cafe
round the corner. Put on weight while I was working there I did.

NIG over Holborn Station gets best cafeteria style food award and the
modem firm in Hatfield for best coffee I have ever drunk in office hours
and it was free and they laid on really nice Danish pastries which
nobody but me ate because they were on a diet.

SKB in Harlow gets worst ever canteen. Ever. Perfectly good food ruined
by making it fancy and failing.

Best corporate Veggie Grub was Robson Rhodes but then Cook, who was a
veggie, loved me because I complimented the freshness of her salads and
used to show off for my benefit.

And Sun for laying on bowls of fruit all over the office.

Fords in Dagenham did a fabulous "meat" stew/pie made from a soy product
called "K meat" which was totally indistinguishable from the real thing
and when on the menu was the only time you saw office staff in the main
    canteen on nights.

  2. My apprenticeship with BT meant that I was either chauffeured to the
nearest best fucking cafe in the town or had a mobile canteen frying up
all day on a butane ring right next to where I was working.

Ours is free, but the machines only work three days out of ten. P

Proper coffee bean grinder type things, they are.

    <They don't know they're born mode>

As an Aircraft Technician apprentice with Hawkers we used to pay 2p for a
bread roll (no butter) and have it with a bowl of gravy (free) from the
    works canteen at lunchtime.

It was the "ratburger" - home made identifiable meat in a roll - from the
tea trolley at 3pm that would keep us going (in both senses).

I did literally spit out my coffee when I heard what the new name was.
It's tempting to tell the new owner she may as well call it The
Dripping Gash, but I'll leave her to wallow in her naivety instead.
Besides, she's a Harley owner so she's used to being the subject of
    much piss-taking.

  17. Worst one I've ever been in was GEC General Signal in Borehamwood where
I worked (briefly) back in 1987.

I ate there only when I couldn't avoid it. Fortunately I didn't need to
very often because I was living at home and could blag food to take
with me. Which was good because I was still paying off my very large
    student overdraft[1].

    Phil.

[1] It's not good having the same initials as your father and having
him open a letter that he thinks is addressed to him which is actually
a 'pay us or we send the boys round' letter from Lloyds. I despise
banks intensely. All my banking stuff is done with building societies
    who have remained building societies..

I once had an exploding plaice there - I couldn't get my knife into it
and when I pushed the fork down to hold it still it shattered and
everybody at the table got a bit.

I always liked the chicken run of crossing the main road to get to the
    canteen though.

  20. I've managed to forget the details (with much effort and alcohol) -
    thanks for reminding me.

I do remember the decor - it was very much a 70's works canteen.
Well yes. And sometimes being mown down by a car was preferrable to
    eating the food.

I left that job with no regret whatsoever. Crap job (doing CAD of
railway signalling equipment on a 4-terminal minicomputer system that
struggled if more than 1 person was using it - and I know more about
the internals than the systems manager did after I'd been there about a
month), crap company (morale at an all-time low, sales and technical
hated each other, losing money hand over fist and only kept going by
being part of GEC) and the worst food in the northern hemisphere..
