Our *vending machine* has gone up to 40p a cup, the proper coffee shop
is about 80p. Having to pay for coffee at work is lame.

You work from home. Doesn't that mean you still have to pay for
    coffee in the office? :)

I'm working from home a lot less than I was, maybe 3 days a week..
Anyway I don't begrudge paying for decent coffee, but 40P/cup for
vending machine slop seems a bit like money grabbing to me.

actually, I've just checked - the tap in the kitchen area has one of
the "caution very hot water" signs, but the ones in the loos (which
seem just as hot to me) don't.

In Paris, I don't think there are any warning signs.

  8. When we got bought up 2 years ago the first thing the new owners did
was make all the coffee machines free-vend.

    Morale went up overnight!

The next thing they did was sack the then-MD and marketing director -
    morale went up even more..

I remember when I was at a hosting company, back at the tail end of the
dotcom era, the management decided that one simple way to tighten the
company belt was to start charging for drinks from the vending machines.

10p a cup. Ten pence. Ten fucking pence. Never before has such a small
sum of money pissed off so many people. Quality management.

But the best I've ever seen was the canteen (such as it was) at the
Beeb's place in Maidenhead. 15p for a slice of toast. 5p extra if you
    wanted it buttered. Wtf?

Our canteen is the same, *and* they charge for ketchup.

  13. We don't have this problem - we don't have a canteen at all.

But we do have a good greasy-spoon caff just down the road and one of
my team is on good terms with the owner..

When I say 'canteen', I mean snack shop that happened to do three
    varieties of hot food:

    - Soup of the day
    - Toast
    - Jacket potatoes

The operators of the 2nd floor 'canteen' were also the owners of the
appliances in the kitchenette area on the 1st floor, including the
microwave. This became something of a, er, hot potato, when they
realised that people were bringing in their own spuds and cooking them
    in said microwave.

You can guess what happened next...

All employees were banned from using the microwave to heat potatoes, on
the basis that the 2nd floor canteen was unable to compete (and that was
the word used) with its own microwave.

    I so miss that place.

Yes it is but as I've explained before I top it up as I go along. It
    gets stronger.

We had that with kettles. Apparently they became a health and safety
risk, and instead using the vending machines for an 8p cup of hot [1]
    water was the proposed solution.

When I was a poor apprentice at the local hospital I could buy two
slices of buttered bread for 5p, and mustard was free. I ate mustard
sarnies every tea break for 3 years.

    LOL

    OK, you "win".

I now work somewhere that has free toast & marge, and free tea & coffee.
So I guess I win. Go me.
