    As root just do
    tar cf - . | (cd /target; tar xf - )

    Everything from the current directory will be picked up including the
    hidden files without having to faf about with regular expressions.

    I use this all the time and it just works.

    Otherwise there's always rsync <fx mutters: muuhhaahaa > which I like
    because it can display progress statistics and it's fantastically useful
    friend rsnapshot (but thats for backups).

    I'd be surprised if there were many dot files in /home itself, but you
    might want to use tar properly and go for '-C /target' on the end of the
    command rather than a subshell and cd.
