If a Contractor is working a significant distance away from home and is
renting accomodation for use during the week may they also claim tax
allowance for a vehicle at the rented address used only for commuting and
business during the week. Where they can prove they travel home by other
means at weekends and have different transport there??

I'm not sure about tax allowances as such, but when I was EKS, I used
to claim mileage allowance for my commute at 40p/mile (IIRC). This was
valid up to 10,000 miles per annum, again IIRC.

I never had to prove where I was travelling from or to, nor which
    vehicle I was using.

In your case, I think I'd just do the same.

    Ask your accountant.

FWIW, while renting in London, I claimed travel back home, and home to
    station.
Also while in London I claimed for travel (train ) to custys other sites.

Best to just claim mileage, that way less hassle.
