  1. Not authoritive; but I know what I read with my own eyes. I've mentioned
    this before, but to recap...

In 1978 or thereabouts, BP were exploring likely spots in the S Atlantic
and published a report on their finding in about 1980. They said there
were fucking hyoooogee oil deposits round about the Falklands (funnily
enough, mostly within a radius of about 200nm, if memory serves) but
that it wasn't recoverable with current North Sea technology. In another
20 or 30 years time, things might be different.
    That's it.

  2. There's another thing; given the decline of the British Merchant fleet,
it's been impossible for the past ten years or so for a similar number
of mercantile vessels to be rustled up in support should the need arise
    again.

Well I think that this sub-thread started when I questioned if, after
the conflict started did the French continued to supply support to the
    Argentinians.

If the answer's yes then I feel this action was pretty despicable since
we are both supposed to be partners in the EC.

What about all the vessels using a british 'flag of convenience'...

Does it occur to anyone that invasion of the Jap mainland was not necessary?

  9. You mean foreign-owned vessels flagged in Britain? That would surely fly
against the whole point of 'flag of convenience'? I'm not in possession
of the facts (since when did that matter), but I'd think there wouldn't
    be many of them.

British owned vessels flagged out to Liberia or somewhere similar would
probably be numerous enough, but if HMG started requisitioning them, I
can see various legal shit hitting fan.

  10. Even at Rorke's Drift, there were more than eight.
Now if Stanley Baker and Michael Caine had been in Port Stanley, things
    might have been very different.

Fair enough; the French are a bunch of cheese-eating surrender
monkeys who could only fight their way out of one paper bag in ten.

    If it was wet.

    And looking the other way.

    And smaller than them.

Perhaps we could hand Gib over when the Spaniards hand over Cueta and
    Mellilla, etc. to the Moroccans
