Yes Dan, but it's already been established that the order to sink the
Argentinian ships came from Downing St, so the sub commander must have
reported. Since there was a group of three ships in close formation and
no-one else around, just a bearing wouldn't have helped much. And none
of the ships was fitted out for hunting/killing subs.

I'm happy to bow to your superior knowledge Mick. It makes no odds to the
    main debate anyway.

Indeed. Doesn't make the action any 'righter' though IMO.

Ooo sir sir!, he's provided a URL which could be used against his
    argument!

You are a ToSSER AIMFF special Union Jack waving pull-out photo
    memoribilia sections.

No, on second thoughts, keep 'em.

I guessed you'd pick on that bit and not address the rest of the points
    raised by my post.

Easier if we keep it simple eh? Keep waving the flag.

  9. It's nothing to do with shells or 218 miles to land. It was how close
she was to the British Task Force, and the fact that she was carrying
Exocet missiles, and she wanted to attach.

Indeed, and the Wilson and Callaghan Gubmints tried to get it sorted.

Even the less rabid Tories tried to wind it all down.
Not so sure about this though. The commonwealth *could* be a progressive
and exemplary institution given the right kind of input IMO

More despicable than the septics supporting Saddam with weapons? What
about the Brit military providing training to the Burmese dictatorship?
Not to mention exporting torture weapons to them.
I abhor the arms trade. I just think it odd that the Brit Gubmint would
whine about this when they do just as despicable things all the time.
    Re-read what I wrote.
Heh, I think that's more the other way round.

You're the dumb one. The french have their own weapons exporting industry
to protect, as do the Brits. No good whining about it if you condone our
    own export of weapons.

Hmm, well you've switched the subject again.

Americans supporting Saddam with weapons during the Iran/Iraq war wasn't
that good; then again at the time Iran seemed more despicable than Iran.

Burma; I've no knowledge of so won't comment.
    But you've still not responded.
Can't be arsed. You needed to label them before condemning them for
cheering at the sinking of the Belgrano; that's the point I was making.
I doubt it. I've no chips on my shoulder about people from the North.
I've spent a fair amount of time there.

Unless I've missed what you typed and you meant that you've a monkey on
your shoulder about being a northern chip.

I had this vague notion that subs could communicate by ultra low frequency
comms underwater? or perhaps that was dodgy propoganda

Well I'd be surprised if we'd support an oponent of one of our partners
within the EU under a similar condition.

No, not at all. They do that but IIRC this a very low bitrate data
media- I don't think it's morse. I read an article about it in one of
the IEE journals many years ago.
