There is some evidence of this on the 'net - but I can't find anything
    concrete.

However, I also remember that not only did the French continue to supply
(and support with French personnel in Argentina) Exocets, they also
failed to come forward with any information that would help us defend
    our ships against the threat.

[1] I have a great deal of faith in out diplomats to threaten other
folks in a sufficiently meaningful manner that they should believe it
when we do. In my mind there is nowt wrong with a well worded phrase
which has the eventual meaning of "Try it on **** and see what happens."
My suggestion is that our lads did just that. The fact that they tried
it on and saw what happened is really their problem.

  4. No but you need some very specialised receivers (which the Argis didn't
have) to pick up VLF and no chance if it was a ku band sat link.

I'm assuming they continued to help the Argentinians commission the
weapons during the build up to and the early stages of the conflict.

If, and it's a big if, that's true it's absolutely despicable.

Why aren't you bothered about this though, given that you apparently
abhor the loss of life it seems from this thread that it's only
    Argentinian life that bothers you.

It's still my perception you've an issue/issues with the UK government
of the day and that the 'concern for life' is not the major issue.

I noted elsewhere the "appalled by hooray-henries" line. You've a chip
or two on your shoulder about being a Northern Monkey I suppose.

    Jesus...

To make it simpler for you:

The French had already sold Exocet. After the Falklands invasion, they gave
assurances that they would not supply the technical information to use them.
However, for the six weeks it took the UK task force to arrive, they carried
    on. Ok?

Without their assistance, it is possible that the missiles would not have
been correctly calibrated, installed, spun up, programmed, you name it...

There's no getting stuff past you, is there. Well that is if it's stuff
    from the 70s anyway

    It's from Brain Damage:

"And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
and if there is no room upon the hill
and if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
you raise the blade, you make the change
you rearrange me ' till I'm sane
    you lock the door
    and throw away the key
there's someone in my head but it's not me "

Hmm... I suppose replacing that with a lunatic's ramblings from his
suicide note is probably a positive step...

As an aside, saw a v.interesting documentary on the Exocet a few months
back. From a day or two after the invasion, MI5 were setting up dummy
companies to buy up all the Exocet missiles on the open market, and other
companies to take huge deposits from the Argentinians who were desperate to
get their hands on as many as possible. This was before the attack on the
Sheffield, so at least someone was thinking ahead.

Heh, the BBC caused more damage than good too. They're the ones that
said that the "Argie bombs" weren't exploding, because they weren't
being primed properly (something to do with the altimeter fuse, I
    think).

So shortly after that, they Argentinian aircraft started to fly higher.

    That's _very_ clever, IMHO.

Conveniently snapping up all the missiles you can use, whilst at the
same time stopping the enemy getting hold of 'em..... crippling the
Argentine weapons budget at the same time.

    Nice.

A good idea in principle I reckon but kin bad for us here in practice.

Especially when you get half the third world wanting to stay British and

    I thought it was:

"For you that's how the world coud end,
Not with a bang but a wimpy"

I saw John Cooper Clarke live in oh, 1978/79? Supporting Richard Hell
and the Void-Oids and Elvis Costello.

I bumped into him in Newbury outside the Corn Exchange in 2000. He
looked just the same. I'm guessing that smack has hither-to
    undiscovered anti-aging properties.

He's awfully talented and I like his work a lot. One of my favourites
was, and is, (you'll never see a nipple in the) Daily Express

You're quite right, I did it from memory but then looked it up
    http://www.cyberspike.com/clarke/psycle.html

I saw him live in 1987 at the Walthamstow Standard, 1997 Brighton
Concord, 1999 Glastonwick. The set, and jokes, remained the same. TBH I
prefer him as a poet rather than a pretty average stand-up.

At Walthamstow after the show I was at the bar (in railway uniform, for
reasons too dull) when JCC approached and said "nationalised, he can
    stay".

Rather than the audience with the great man I was rather hoping for he
fucked off round the back but me and my mate got a lock in. Which was a
    result.

  18. Given the huge puddles of oil under the surrounding the Falklands, I'm
damn sure we'd want to keep them.

Maggie pissed me right off when she denied the existence of it, thus
making it seem that our servicemen were killed for a bit of flagwaving.
There's nothing wrong in holding strategically important territory - so
long as the truth is told about it.
