Well since Mark Thatched did some "arms dealing" and Margaret Thatcher
did some "war mongering" that must have been the main thrust of your
    thoughts.

I can't see any other reason for you wibbling on about the Americans in
    this thread.

Maybe your little French Friend can come and tell me off for daring to
suggest what I think was on your mind?

Was that the one we did? The one where we sunk half their navy rather

Going off on a bit of a tangent here, I note that we've sold at least
one of the old Type 42 Destroyers to the Argies.

Still, at least we know _exactly_ where to hit one of those to sink it
if they have another go in the next 50 years.....

It was well past it's float-by date.

  7. Not arguing that it was old - merely that it was being used as a troop
    carrier.

Of all the vessel types in the world, about the most unsuitable for use
as a bulk carrier of human beings is a dedicated, fully equipped
    warship.

"Hand over the ships or we'll sink them."

    "NON!"

"OK, you've had your warning. OPEN FIRE!"

(And the Huns almost certainly would have got their mitts on the vessels
if it hadn't been done. In fact, the Frogs would probably have handed
them over, fully provisioned and armed, with a smile and a murmur of:
    "Angleterre is in zat direction, mein herr".}

....and sold them lots of spares for the ships engines because they are
based on civil aero gas turbines and therefore could circumvent the
    'military equipment' embargo.

  12. I'd imagine it would. Perplexity, perhaps.

Well, pray tell what's on mine? I'm all ears and would welcome your
    expert opinion.

You also failed to address any of the points I raised but, hey what's
    new?

I thought you said up there somewhere that "it was her decision and
her's alone, the murdering bitch" or at least words to those ends. You
can't have your cake and eat it, you know.

  16. At least they had some sort of warning - quite how much, I don't know.
It was the Vichy Navy, though. I suspect there were plenty of French
sailors on board those ships who, if they'd been given a chance, might
have been able to take over and sail the ships out to join the British.

Otoh, too much time might/would have given the Vichy commanders the
    opportunity to fire back.

Must have been a bloody awful decision to make at the time for the RN
    Admiral.

It doesn't say that she agreed with cabinet, merely that she consulted
with cabinet. You'll find she agreed with some faceless MOD Knob who'll
forever remain faceless unless Geoff Hoon decides to expose him to save
    the governments face.
    Hmm, yum, with cream too.

It had 600 odd troops on it. Ergo it was being used as a troop carrier.

It's suitability for the task is entirely another issue.

Happy new year by the way.
