I don't like arms dealers at the best of times. When they are in the
same family as war mongerers in positions of power the stench of
corruption and death becomes almost overpowering.

A bit like Bush, Rice, Rumsfeld and the rest of the Merry Oil Brigands.

That was the propaganda at the time. The Top Brass knew it was an old
    tub.
I reckon Galtieri knew as well as Thatcher did that there was no way he
could get away with landing those troops. If he thought he could, the
ship wouldn't have spent 36 hours dithering about just outside the
exclusion zone. He'd have steamed in and out ASAP to get the ship away
before the UK task force got any stronger.

Ah, the bit that does make it look as if the Falklands/Malvinas are part of
    someone elses continent then. :)

    Enjoy your Hols.

Lets try to make some changes for the better in the 21st eh.
Why be earthbound when you can reach for the stars?

Wouldn't "yes" have been a shorter reply?

Good point, maybe a good place to start is somewhere apart from the
beginning of the tail end of the last century then?

  10. And she mounted.... eight-inch guns, were they? How big does Sir want
his guns before they qualify as "fucking dangerous"?

  11. We've done this before. Even the Korean War was not a declared war.

He's just using selective memory and snipping again.

Snot how big they are but whether or not they are loaded which is the

It depends, was the ship sunk by Thatcher or Galtieri?

    From http://www.angelfire.com/fm/odyssey/LEYTE_USS_Phoenix_.htm

"In the 1970's she was modernised and equipped with British Seacat
short-range missiles, and Dutch radar, although she retained her
original battery of fifteen 6-inch guns as her "main" armament.

She was to have been fitted with French Exocet sea-skimming
surface-to-surface missiles, but these were in the event never
    installed.

On 26 April 1982, in the opening stages of the "South Atlantic War"
between Britain and Argentina, she sortied from the port of Ushuahia,
escorted by two guided-missile destroyers. On 2 May, in
controversial circumstances, she was attacked without warning by the
British nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarine Conqueror, and hit
with two torpedoes. She sank rapidly, with the loss of 368 of her
    crew"

Ever been hit by a fifteen round 6" broadside?

And no, that's not a euphemism.

Perhaps they should have sunk the destroyers, then.

So the Bismarck was sunk inside UK territorial waters, was it?

Or the Scharnhorst? Or the Graf Spee? Tirpitz?

All those allied convoys were sunk by U-boats within 12 miles of the
    coast?

At least the French Navy was sunk inside French Territorial waters, at
    Oran.

As the reply I gave makes clear, My 'issue' isn't primarily to do with
Thatcher. So although '"yes" have been a shorter reply'
It wouldn't have been a true reply.
Which is why I didn't use it.

    TTFN.

Still not much use for hunting/killing subs or lobbing shells 218 miles
to the nearest land though are they TOG?

  19. See Dodger's post.

And even a six (not eight) inch gun has a range of about 10 miles, IIRC.
