so send a Yule card. Midwinter solstice festival. The origin of the
winter festival that Christians took over and turned into Christmas
    anyway.
Divali's already been and gone. As has Eid ul Fitr. However, Chanukah
is on Dec. 2oth. Ah, hmm, that's already a day off - it's a Saturday.
Oh, don't forget All Fool's Day - that should suit you.

Being Given them and successfully occupyig 'em was two different Kettles
    of fish
William the bastard allowed a native born Earl, Waltheof, to continue in
charge of Northumberland after the conquest, because he couldn't have
replaced him with anyone who could have done an effective job of keeping
out the scots. After his collusion the "Bridal of Norwich" in 1075
Waltheof gave himself to Williams mercy and had his eyes put out. I
    think he was exiled too.

****, he's predictable. Not you, SD; Des. See the rest of the thread,
which he carefully avoided posting to.

Mind you, Des of course will argue (correctly) that "UK" doesn't mean
Norman England and (incorrectly) that this was what he meant all

It's very odd, only seeing his quoted stuff, but less odd that seeing
the full monty, as it were.

Nae, that's Afghanistan. Iraq will eventually [1] return to some kind of
    ruled
    system. [2]

[1] Could be some time, mind you.

[2] Maybe even sort of democratic?

    This, I agree with.
    And this.
And possibly this too. _But_ it's not always guaranteed to stop
'persecution'. I was bullied for most of my time at grammar school,
much of it aimed at the fact that I always wore cast-off, half
worn-out, blazers etc. So there's always going to be something that
    can be picked up on.
Dunno if this is an inevitable consequence, though.

I must say, though, that I'm re-thinking some of my views on this
whole topic, given the range of responses here.

I guess I just applaud the french gibmint's secular stance as I
believe that all religions are _a_bad_thing_ and as such shouldn't be
allowed at all. The rest of the argument has perhaps been made just to
    support that position.

  9. And obviously doesn't believe in seperation between
church and state becuase it is quite happy to rule on religious
    matters..

  11. Because you are being bigoted againt religion...
It could be construed as such - especially if dogs are the
only animals people would ever take in there.
So you are perfectly happy to deny me my 'right' to practice my
religion (which BTW is guarenteed by the European Human
Rights Directive) in order to assert your 'right'?

    Nice logic.

  13. Agreed so far..
Especially if the state tells us that anyone who practices a religion
is in some way bad or outlawed..
Like said display being banned? The state showing active disapproval
    of religion?

Don't you think that might create the very bias you are trying to
    avoid?
    And despise *all* religions?

  14. It will teach children that it's OK to discriminate against people on
    the basis of religion?

    Great lesson.
Rubbish. It will foster 'intolerance of religion' which would
    be a bad thing.

  15. And who burnt the synagogues 50 years ago? Who handed the Jews over
to the Nazis willingly in order to get rid of the Jews?

    It wasn't Arab kids..

no - I can't remember which one it is)

  17. And how would you know? I assure you that religious bigotry
exists - but mostly it's the bigotry of those who deride religion
    against those who practice it.

Something that I have been subject to most of my life.

Maybe if they did, there'd be less bigotry in the world.

Not so, they are encultured to become such.

Furthermore, some societies may be biased, prejudiced and vicious, but
    not all.

Nasty brutish and short is for people who read two chapters of Hobbes on
a supplementary undergrad course and think they have thereby grasped the
    whole of western philosophy.
