the 15th day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashwin
(Aasho) (October / November) every year

    So you've missed it.

What with Diwali, Eid, and Bonfire night all around the same time,
it's not surpring the IOD is like a war zone at that time of year,
with each little group trying to outdo each other in the ordnance
    department.

So what is the next piss up on the religious calendar then?

Does Chinese New Year count as religious or is that just a piss up?

Well using the experience I have gained with my own children and those
of others whom I have known. I would be inclined to disagree.

I am not dissing education but it seems to me that children are in the
main formed and set in their ways within 5 years of being born and that
process is called "bringing up". Education gives them book leaning.

  7. I think most people's characters are formed early in life. How much is
environmental conditioning and how much down to parenting is anyone's
    guess.

Absolutely nothing prepares one for kids. And all the manuals are as
useful as a Haynes BoL with half the pages missing. All you can do is
your best - and it'll never be good enough.

But I do. It has got to be religious or it won't be fair and equal.
Snot religious though is it? It's ethnic and we are trying to eradicate

Amazingly I would see it from completely the opposite perspective. If
children are allowed to mingle with people from diverse religions then they
have a better chance of treating those who are different as people and not
    as stereotypes.

If, OTOH, you package every schoolkid up the same then all of the kids learn
that conformity is good and anybody who doesn't conform is an outsider.

This aside, my question was how it effects the _education_ of the children.
The responsibility of the state is to provide an education for its children.
So, if you please, in your capacity as a school-teacher, explain to me the
purely educational impact of allowing personal demonstrations of religion.

What's even more amazing is that, if you're after a debate, you don't
pick someone nearer you're own intellectual weight. I never had you

The Native American lands were only taken from them *before* 4/7/1776?

Even the bits Napoleon sold off in 1803? Or Texas? Or the Wild West?

Why were the Injuns always shooting up wagon trains, then, when all
they needed to do was complain to the British Embassy?

Blimey, the things you learn on here.

Can I just point out that, at the time, the leaders of America thought that
it would be the 2nd of July that would be celebrated as the birth of their
nation, because that's when they declared independence.

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the
history of America" wrote John Adams.

The 4th of July is celebrated because that's the date the printer put on the
    copies he was running off.

But, doesn't that cause a problem with the argument, that children as
parents of man should be educated for tolerance and the ability to
observe difference but not to judge on these, if the observance of and
education about these differences is entirely left to the parents, which
are the bearer of prejudice? [1]. I've been brought up in a faith and
had to attend RE up to the age of 14. Now, I may have found it tedious, but
as well as learning about my inherited religion, I did learn a lot about
other religions, Christian and non-Christian. Which I'd say is something
    positive.

Though wouldn't you aggree that a visible prejudice is much easier tackled,
understood and resolved than an intangible one. If a child is only able [2]
to discuss [3] this at home, it would be severely restricted in its
    available
    pont of views, wouldn't it?

[2] And taking it out of the school, which represents one half of
a childs life would do that.

[3] Such 'discussions' are rarely held in a dialogue, but usually in an
    instructiove fashion. Parents --> Children

    [1] German style sentence I'spose

I remember listening to a radio 4 description of a decapitation in saudi
arabia some years ago. This was of a filipino maid, or similar, who
killed her 'master' after he'd raped her. (actually I *may* be wrong
    about that bit...)

Anyhow... they had the poor sucker face down waiting for the blade to
strike and then the executioner in a single fluid movement jabbed the
unfortunate at the base of the spine and then sliced the head off.

Apparently jabbing the base of the spine causes the unfortunate to
straighten up, sticking their neck out and giving a 'clean target' for
    the executioner's sword.

And on the way back from the airport, listening to some R4 thing, it
sounds like the main result of knocking Sadam off his perch has been to
give the Islamic fundamentalists a platform in Iraq.

    Well.. great.

Still, the way I feel I wish someone would launch the fucking bomb and
    end my misery anyway.
