"A French commission calls for a ban on conspicuous religious signs,
such as crucifixes and headscarves, in schools."

    Quite right too. Fucking weirdos.

IMO, 'sactually a very good idea. It means that state remains separate
from the church and so the Church(es) can't interfere in the running
of state schools. France has been a secular state since the first
    republic, IIRC.

This ban is a run on from the fact that kids can't wear religious
symbols, like crosses, St David stars, etc.

Uni's and private schools are exempt.

Surely it's just a correct separation of church and state? They're not the
only religious accountrements banned in French schools and this is just the
continuation of a strict adherence to maintaining a secular state - if
someone wishes to live by the faith of a religion, *any* religion, fine, but
keep it separate from the running of the country.

Otherwise you (could) end up with the situation in the US where 'God' speaks
to GWB every day and tells him he's doing the right thing, whilst on the
other side of the world 'God' speaks to numerous Paelstinians and half the
Israeli cabinet (at the same time!!) telling them that *they're* all doing
    the right thing too....

Whereas if the members/users of the state apparatus are allowed to belong to
whatever religion they like, but are (correctly) required to leave it at the
door and (try to) do the non-biased correct thing when in
office/court/school then it (hopefully) allows for less prejudice and less
confrontation as anyone dealt with/brought up before/taught within those
institutions is (or rather should be) treated purely on merit.

Or something. Look it's been a long week and I'm strangely sober, which
brings out the amateur philosopher in me....

It's cultural racism IMHO from the point of view of Moslem girls and Jews.

    Jews.

Nope only applies to state run schools, if the god bothers want to run
their own schools and where trinkets to display their misplaced faith
    then they can.

State schools *in particular* should be free of this kind of cultural
    fascism.

Indeed. Even the fascists should be free to express themselves.

    Why? You forgot Christians, BTW.

The French have always had this standpoint on schools and religion.
Even the Catholic church agreed with this standpoint, when it was
first introduced years ago, concerning crucifixes. It even appears
(according to the BBC World Service) that the head scarf thing is in
the most part, due to pressure from devout followers of Islam.
Furthermore, it was reported that the majority of muslim schoolgirls
that were interviewed, did not want to wear the head scarves and be
    forced into it.

FFS, look at the influence that the CoE has in UK schools with things
like sex education, etc. IMO, the church should not be allowed to
interfere in the education of children.

As soon as you let people start wearing symbols of religious belief,
then persecution starts. Fairy nuff, if you're an adult you can deal
with it in different ways. When you're a kid, it's tougher. Remove the
signs and this reduces the amount of problems.

You appear to be confusing secular with fascism - in this instance the
French are to be applauded IMNSHO.

Secularism is represented by not forcing any brand of religious education on
the pupils. This is something else altogether.

    Not particularly
You think children should have no values or instructions imposed by the
    parents? interesting.
The CoE are twats of the highest order about on a par with the CoR.

Bad form, etc, but I've been told that small _discreet_ religious
    symbols are permitted.
