While in the US, we happened across the US129. Also known as the "Tail of
the Dragon", 318 bends in 11 miles.

It was fun, I grinned... a lot.

Rumour has it the round trip record is 22 mins.

Did you get to see the 'tree of shame'? Bits of my daughter's bike are
    on that tree.

Nope, but by then I think we were oblivious to road side
paraphinalia[sp?], what with shoe trees, bottle trees, car henge and all
the other guff left at the side of the roads :)

Ged, the US is *full* of certifiable nutters !

    Yanks are so /pussy/.

The Captain Cook Highway from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation in
Australia that I drove last week is like that.

Except that on one side it's a mountain and the other a cliff down to
    a beach so slight distracting.

And the Aussies don't believe in putting up armco. Apparently if you
get it wrong and go flying into the sea, it's because you're a driving
    like a twat.

And the bikers over there are all weird, they don't break the speed
    limit.

Supposedly a lot of fun, that. But unfortunately plod has really been
cracking down on bikes on that one recently...

Really? They must have redone it since I rode it 2 years back as I don't
recall it being anything like that winding.

Did you hire a bike from the chap in PD?

  15. ... and then after a week you could walk normally again.

Or is that only in the US?

Actually, I got a bit mixed up. I'm thinking of the bit from Palm
Cove (north of Cairns) to Port Douglas, and the stretch north of the
Daintree River to Cape Tribulation. The bit after Port Douglas was
pretty open and straight through the sugar cane plantations.
No, was in a car as my wife refuses to go on the back of a bike.

Wasn't just the bikes either, cars, utes, everything.

Meant every fucker tailgates like mad because they won't go over the
limit to overtake you, even on dual carriageway, if you're at the
    limit.
