One my mates has just bought a D300s. He says the video doesn't appear
    to be auto focssing.[1]

I bought a D300 body last week for £600, at that price I don't think
I'll miss it's lack of video.

[1] He's still working his way through the manual.

    I'd prefer a 7D.

Looks at pile of Nikon lenses.

    No, it really doesn't.

Anyways, I thought the 7D was the one to go for.

Yeah, I think it's the same on my D90. Not that I've ever bothered to try
    it.

AIUI it's the same on the 5DMkii as well. Slight problem with the mirror
    not being in the way?

    V. good price indeed. It's rare that one goes for less than £800 on ebay
    - I've been watching them for a while. I guess they may drop a bit more
now that the S is more common.

The 7D is very nice - but it's not got the full frame sensor - which is
useful to get more zoom from your lenses, but a pain at the wide end.
Also, the larger sensor gives a much smaller depth of field at wide
appertures, which I like. Subjectively, I feel the 5D MKii is lower
    noise at high ISO too.

5D mkII high ISO performance is excellent. I run mine on ISO 800 most of the
time and I'm happy to use ISO 1600. I don't even like to use ISO 400 on the
50D bceause of the noise. I quantify the 5D as 3 stops less noisy then the
    50D. I had a go on a Nikon D700 - that's even less noisy then the 5D - but I
own a box of Canon lenses, so I bought the 5D. As for the 7D; I haven't had
a go with one but I would imagine that the small sensor and high pixel count
won't make it any less noisy than the 50D. I suspect the 7D will be better
(than the 5D) for sports because of its high frame rate and more
    sophisticated focus system.
