    Care to expand on that?
As ginge said, there's the steering lock. Also, the wrist-heavy riding
position wouldn't make for comfortable town riding. Less comfortable
would equate to less concentrated on the task, I'd imagine. The better
acceleration may make it harder to rigorously stick to the speed
limits. The stiff suspension would make the ride harsher than a GS500,
again going back to a comfort thing.

Unless he's been riding his 996 or race bikes for a while and so is
used to the riding position and the nature of the bike I'd think it
would be easier to do the test on the GS. As this isn't usually the
case for test candidates, I assumed otherwise.

Not right now - gotta go, but it's all to do with the circumference
of the tyre - as you lean further over, you're reducing it as the
contact patch gets closer to the edge of the tyre, and hence it's like
    running on smaller wheels.
Not a problem, as I said. Manouevres like the U turn must take into
    account the steering lock.
How long does a test last?
    Not sure I'd agree.
The better braking making it much easier, though.
The precise suspension making it much easier to take a tight line.
Whenever I've ridden something like a GS500 I find it heavy to steer,
very uncomfortable (what wierd shape of person are they designed for
anyway?) awkward to lug around and generally much less precise. I'd
much prefer to do the test on something proper.

30 mins (I think), most of which would be in town.
I know if I'm not comfortable I won't be relaxed and will be niggled.
I won't be as concentrated as I would be if I'm comfortable and relaxed.
So drag the brakes all the time? Eh?
Which is *crucial* on a test...
During the test you're riding near or at speed limits. I'm sure I'd
find that much easier on a bike designed to go at those slower speeds
rather than a 996 which is designed to go round racetracks very quickly
indeed. I'm not saying it's impossible on a 996, just that I'm sure
it'd be much easier on something smaller and town-oriented.

    <jumping in a bit late>

I recall that just after I did my test in 198something that the TZR125 was
released and they found that, despite all efforts, it was virtually
impossible to pass the Part 1 test on one as the steering lock just wasn't
tight enough to get round the good old figure of 8 cones and stuff...

I remember watching one of my instructors (£15 for as many 2 hr lessons as
you needed on Sunday mornings off Police riders at a local school car park)
doing the course easily on the GSXR750 he'd just won off MCN... I got more
    dabs on my (Alfa'd natch...) GS125... :)

You can paste text X-Faces directly into the XFace thing in
    'Identities'.

Right-click on the XFace image in the identities dialog and select
'Paste'. It will accept text X-Faces as well as graphics.

That's what I did orginally, but it didn't seem to come out correctly
in every newsreader. I got it to work by putting in the X-Face header.

There's a few suggestions about it I've got, and I seem to be lacking
in tuits for finding where to send them. Is there a webpage that I can
look at that'll give the recommended format for sending stuff in?

FWIW, I'll try to make it reasonably sensible, not "it doesn't work!
    fix it! fix it!"

Other than the above, it's quite good. I've not gone back to gravity
    yet, which speaks for itself.

I had a few dodgy tries at it and some might say it still looks dodgy,
but mine re-sorted itself when I put the code in as one long line,
rather than the cut and paste job I did on the converter, which was over
    three lines IIRC.

Have a look at this. Don't know if it's what you're after but it's the
    first thing I thought of:

    http://www.dairiki.org/xface/xface.php
I used to find Gravity rather good, but the latest 2060 incarnation has
proved to be very unstable at times; crashing at least every half an
hour and sometimes after only a few minutes.

Bit of a shame really. I've been using it since before MicroPlanet went
    tits up.

There are XanaNews support newsgroups on the forums.talkto.net server

    :)

Wtf is an "X-Face", other than an extra header full of gibberish?

I did, the other day. But it doesn't have SOCKS support, so I went back
    to something that works.

How does one kill a thread in XanaNews? [1]

I've tried Ctrl+Del and Ctrl+H but neither seem to stop new posts in a
    thread from appearing...

I'm looking for the equivalent of 'K' in Mozilla.

[1] Believe it or not some people don't read every thread in UKRM :)

Ctrl+h is supposed to kill that branch and stop further downloads but
there appear to be problems with it. I think Colin knows about it and
    it's under 'review'.

You can set up a filter to not download (ctrl+i) based on subject but
thats a bit of a pita.

The forums.talkto.net server is very useful.

Thanks, I thought CTRL+H was the one I wanted. In fact if (when) it
works it's better than killing a thread as one can ignore a sub branch
    of a thread.

cheers, I might take a look.
