If anyone is thinking of travelling the Omeo Hwy be careful after the fires
the ground cover has gone and stone dirt and sand has run down over the
road. this makes it very slippery, and when caravans are coming the other
way and push you out near the edge the only way is down. And that's the way
I went ripped up the bike pretty bad, and the shoulder is no the best
    either.

    Ouch.
Know what you mean though, I recently did Omeo to Falls Creek on the postie,
quite a lot of dirt and dust on the road in places. The bushfires absolutely
decimated the entire area, there is no foliage left, and plenty of erosion.
They were doing some roadworks when I went through, but the majority of it
    is a real hazard.
A pity, because its an awesome road!

    Cheers,

A rider was killed on the road yesterday.

    Vic: Motorcyclist dies in
eastern Victoria Toll Vic MELBOURNE, Jan 26 AAP - A motorcyclist died when
he came off his bike in Victoria's east yesterday. Police said the
49-year-old from Pearcedale in Melbourne was riding with a group of
friends on the Great Alpine Road near Omeo when he went into a slide on a bend.
A spokeswoman said the man fell from his bike and struck the roadside
safety railing about 4.45pm (AEDT). He died at the scene, taking
Victoria's the state's road toll to 26, down by eight on the same time
    last year.

The road has always had sand and rocks on it when ever I have travelled
on it. If your not prepared to acept that then stick to the race track?
We all stuff up from time to time though. Most of the time 'we' get away
with thoes mistakes, some times though ...

    different road
he was killed on the road between Hotham and Omeo, which is in great nick, I
did it 3 times on the weekend, The Rd the OP was talking about is between
Omeo and Mitta Mitta and although I didn't do it, some of the group did and
turned back because it was so bad

Does anyone know what kind of railing this was? armco, concrete, or
    wire rope?

Therre are rumours flying around about a Vic rider chopped up by
cheesewire, but only rumours. Be very useful in the fight against
Brifen fencing to be able to point to injuries and fatalities.

There's already one in NSW, bloke on the Pacific Hwy near Newcastle.

As usual eh... so you usually report bad roads to Vicroads, but nothing gets
done. Makes you look pretty stupid for your repeated behaviour without
reward. Most animals learn from their past experience, even 'stupid' ones.

probably more money out of your wallet in the form of speed cameras
and a 5 cops hiding behind trees with radars.

Hey, people spent a lot of time and effort complaining about the
poor state of one of my favourite shortcuts through Christmas Hills,
and now they're widening, smoothening and ruining the fun of it.

.... and what do you bet there'll be more fatalities on it _after_
it's improved, since smoother corners will lead to higher corner
speeds and more 'roo incidents ...

    one word............"Jason" :)

I let him tell you about the breaking of the gate to gate record up Hotham,
I still in disbelief of how fast I rode (I think the average speed was
    85kmh)

From the looks of the works they're doing there I don't think there are going
to be any corners Sharks... pity.. was the best part of the road... and the
only part I used because that 2km section connects two of my favourite roads.

Ditto. And now every motherfucker and his "It's a Jeep Thing"
bumper sticker will be blocking the hairpins down to Yarra Glen,
and so they'll become an accident blackspot and probably get
covered with cheesecutter fence, etc, etc. And it'll all be
the fault of those damn bikies!

Sorry the ride report as follows.
Left Melbourne Saturday morning out along the ring rd up to Yea, Mansfield
out to Benalla, thought I would met up with someone but no go. As this was a
spur of the moment trip I didn't post a ride invite. All roads in great
condition, up to Wang by the freeway then turn right and head for Bright, I
thought of staying in Bright but the place was to crowded (you couldn't
swing a cat in town) and as it was only 2 pm I took off for Omeo via Mt
Hotham. This has to be one of the best rides around it has a bit of
everything and the road condition is great. The only other bike rider I saw
was a cop at Dinner Plain. As it was still early I decided to head for
Anglers Rest for the night, this is were it all came unglued, first half of
the road was fine but about 5 k's out of Anglers Rest was were I went down.
It was the slowest I had been travelling all day as the road did have a lot
of rubbish on it (I have travelled this road many times in the cage and it
has never been like this) the corner I went down on only had about 2 ft of
clear bitumen and as the caravan was using all of his and a bit of mine. I
was in the dirt and down many thanks to the two blokes who showed up after
and helped me pull the bike out of the ditch as there was noway I was going
to do it myself, after that it was a very slow and painful ride to Anglers
Rest. I chucked my swag out and made for the pub thanks to them for the ice
pack alcohol and later Panadol, I got a few hours sleep that night but not
many, (Christ my shoulders sore). In the morning I packed up and had a very
slow ride back to Omeo hospital for x-rays and a check over, at 9:30 the all
clear was given and I headed for home a day earlier than I had planed. It
was a very boring ride slow and easy south to the Hwy and west back to
    Melbourne.
Rang QBE Tuesday morning, Tuesday arvo bike has been picked up for
quote an repairs I am off to the Physio so things are looking up. I will do
it again soon as I can, but next time minus the fall.

    Bugger. Glad you're OK.

Where you came to grief sounds like exactly where we decided to turn
back on Sunday morning. There was too much dirt on the road to allow an
    enjoyable pace.

Now if you'd been checking the newsgroup, and seen Jason's post, you
could have come up with us (we added the Reefton and the Tolmie road to
the trip). We had spare accommodation, too.....

A bike cop ad Dinner plain? Erk.....

You mean that when I was hunting down and passing that Hirebus[1] on the
road between Omeo and Dinner Plain on Sunday morning there was a
distinct possibility that indiscreet speeds might have attracted
    unwanted attention?

Oddly, though, I think I took most of the interesting bits of that road
    at legal speeds.

    Moike

[1] He was obviously taking it easy, and didn't seem to be put out that
a 25 y.o. Bimmer went past him. I don't see why someone would invest in
a 1300cc sportsbike, ride all the way up to Hotham, and not 'use' it.
Nor was he concerned about the Across that sat behind him but couldn't
quite get past. Maybe the Hirebus rider knew there was a motorbike cop
    lurking.....
