comparable to the latest radial caliper & master cylinder brakes seen on
    current models?
Like the current range of Ohlins, WP, Racetech enhanced single rear shocks
    and multi adjustable USD forks?

aaaah now that's more like a 2005 comment on something from 1976

the difference between that and business-as-usual...

You seem to be more likely to be "taken" out by another bike rider on the
    OPH than a car.

ahahahah... She's adapted to the Gerry-style of defensive riding....don;t go
out there coz they're all out to get you (those 2wheeled hoons as well).

Safest place for ships is in port. But ships weren't designed to stay in
    port.

I disagree. Bikes of this era (last 5 years) are much more reliable,
comparable to the advances in car reliability.

Having toured "then" and "now", with groups of riders on various machinery,
breakdowns much rarer now than 20 years ago.

Major improvements in handling/braking. Learner riders these days have a
much better selection of machinery than then.

The brakes and suspension wouldn't stand up against current sports
stuff, but I'd be inclined to argue that the bonnie would hold it own
against most current non-sports bikes, and a bloody sight better if
you compared it against cruisers and the like.

As for reliability, well that's another story.

    cheers, Bill

Gerry pictures himself more as a port captain...
not going far, but telling everyone else where to go :)

So... a new 1980 GS1000 was substantially less reliable than say a
Bandit 1200 or todays GSX1400? Bikes of similar type with similar
motors... I really can't see that.
Yes, but 20 years ago many people were still riding bikes from the
previous generations. Things like Triumph T140's and Ducati bevels and
    SOHC Hondas.

Those bikes _were_ less reliable, but about 20 years ago the UJM was
starting to be standard. UJM's then were not substantially less
    reliable than UJM's now.
I said 'ignoring handling'... and yes there is a wider range, but I
    never said there hadn't been.

One needs to compare apples and apples, not apples and oranges.
