I use a scraper designed for the purpose. Such as one of the ones at
    http://www.transquip.com.au/index.aspx?Search=scraper

You can never have too many tools!

If you use a knife or a screwdriver you have to be very careful not to
gouge the surface. A scraper has the right bevel and angle to scrape
    without gouging.

When we got the old motors back from warranty claims - we threw them
in the furnace to get rid of the gaskets. did a great job.

Beer Clem? I have taken the DST hour off so we don't have you drinking
    before time.

It takes another hour before the sun goes over the yard-arm.

Head down to the pet store and buy a punnet of gasket bugs. They'll eat
    it off in no time.
