If you're getting a cycle computer, you can buy those little LED lights
that clip onto the handle bars. Alternatively, you could just fit leds
    into your existing clocks.

  4. What I really want to do is get a bit of ali with 7 holes to fit
different coloured LEDs to fit in for the indicator lights, oil warning,
stand etc and have a smaller tacho and speedo. The one's I have atm work
well but the whole assembly just doesn't look right from the side[1].
The whole lot would be tidied up and weight a lot less, too.

[1] Imagine a deflated football made from gaffer tape and stuck on the
end of a bit of pipe.

You can get diy anodizing kits for alloy, black anodizing would suit sir
    I think.
That sounds rather rat like. :)

Agreed. And it doesn't just apply to 2nd hand. I've bought 5 (I
think) brand new bikes over the last 20 years, and only had a test
    ride on one, I think.

I've bought 4 new bikes in 4 years and the only one I test rode was the one
    I ended up disliking.

Had either of you ridden the model you were buying before though? I
think it's fair to say that when buying new you wouldn't expect to test
ride the actual bike you were buying.

    <thinks...>

    New Used (dealer) Used(private)
    TS185c - no. Z750E - yes. KH250 - no.
    GPz750 - no. Z650C - yes. TS250 - no.
    GL1500 - no. CBR1000 yes. KH500 - no.
    CBR1100 - no.

    I think I see a pattern emerging.

    <thinks a bit more>

That's not very many bikes in 26 years, is it?

Didn't we go through all this just a couple of months ago?

    darsy says...
I've bought loads of bikes without test-riding them. In fact, I've paid
out substantial amounts of money for bikes I've never even seen, then
travelled hundreds of miles to pick them up.

Of course you don't test ride the actual machine you're buying, ytc.

    That's what I said isn't it?

You both said you didn't test ride some of the new bikes you had
ridden. I just wondered if you had previously ridden that model before?
(i.e. owned an older one or CIHAGM). Or did you buy it based solely on
    reviews and recommendations.

Yes, it is. And my comment was meant to say that the norm for a test
ride for a new bike is to ride another example of the model (usually a
demonstrator, or perhaps just a 2nd hand example).
    The latter.
