And German engineers quickly found ways of designing with fewer
    bearings.

I *think* we're still at war with Canada.

What was the point of the Dresden, Tokyo and Hiroshima bombings, to
    take three examples?

I may be mistaken here but I thought that the whole point of a war was
to beat your enemy into submission and one way to do it is to
demoralise them. Bombing cities demoralised the civilians living there
and the troops with families there.

If you'd asked me what the point of bombing Nagasaki I might have
struggled to justify it because that was purely an experiment to see
which bomb worked best but otherwise **** 'em.

In case there's any doubt out there I'll clarify things regarding my
view on the most recent areas that British troops have been involved
    in:

I don't think they should be there and if using a few battlefield
nukes would finish off the Taliban and bring them home sooner I'd
    launch them today.

I can still remember being out on a BOTAFOT with the one time ukrm
poster Pete T and when we had to suffer a 15 minute delay due to a
remembrance day parade he sat there with the rest of us having a smoke
and as the march came to an end he turned to us and said "sorry guys".

The casual way in which he said it had me nearly pissing myself with
laughter because like most people I tended to forget that he was
German and his war mongering relatives had fucked up my morning out.

Oh, it did and the perps are largely gone. But we still need to
remember our history and it's still an excuse for a cheap laugh.

I suggest that you discover when rationing ended in the UK and how old
    are the folks who remember.
Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Maybe. I don't really know who my ancestors were. I know 1/16th of
them were "Native Americans". I'm pretty sure some of the rest were
Germans, some were Irish, and some were British. I've heard that I'm
distantly related to President Polk, FWTW.
Oh yeah. When was any war ever civil?

Very profound. Did you make that up all by yourself?

Indeed, there are a fair few of us.
No, it is often incorrectly attributed to Winston S Churchill who nicked
    it from Edmund Burke.

It wasn't our war, why did we get involved. British boys coming home in body
bags. Who do we think we are. Leave other countries to sort out their own
    problems.......

I'll have you know that I've lived through rationing. Sugar rationing in Malta
    that is.

One of my friends used to work for a company headquartered in Germany,
which meant they often had German visitors in the office. One one occasion
he happened to be showing this German bird round Southampton, and
apparently she started criticizing the lack of old architecture in the city
centre, and how it had little character (which is actually fair enough).

When he pointed out that this was because the Luftwaffe had flattened the
entire town centre she went a bit quiet.
