  1. and what about the big Zenith?

to quote one of my favourite authors: "Much of its thunder has been stolen
by the bechromiumed Brough superior, but I always thought of the Zenith as
the 8-litre Bentley of motorcycles, with more weight than can be lifted,
more power than can be used and massive moving parts that go on forever"

Google search for "Zenith" in images brings up a right mixture.

however, adding "motorcycle" produced a few pictures:

    http://www.viewimages.com/Search.aspx?mid=3380852&epmid=2&partner=Google

being a classic Brooklands-racer. Mr Charnock's one was ex-Brooklands, so
was probably not unlike that, although I recall the picture in the book
having mudguards and such, so it'd obviously been re-equipped for the road.
He does however describe "an enormous black silencer full of nothing at all"
which is obviously a Brooklands can. Regulations at Brooklands for them as
don't know, required the use of a standard type of "silencer" from sometime
    in the 20s.

Thus spake The Older Gentleman () unto the assembled multitudes:

There was a bloke here at Sussex in the 70s who had a scruffy Vincent
Rapide. He was a nice enough chap but had this strange habit of going
    around wearing a leather miniskirt...

    FX: peers in tin

Ooo, nice fat worms you've got in there.

Indeed, but there's a lot of difference between an original bike and
something entirely new. It'll come out in the market value
eventually, if (and this I doubt) there's ever an appreciable number
of new Vinnies built. The same is true of the warbird market. 40
years ago there were a handful of airworthy Spitfires and now there's
+/- 45 which range from machines built in the 40s and substantially
still the same aircraft to ones that were built entirely of new parts
around a data plate. All are worth at least a million as that's
roughly what it costs to build/restore one but one with a combat
record and provenance is worth a multiple of that.

That is indeed a rather natty bit of script.

The modern version wouldn't read so well, I fear...

Heh. No indeed. I've not read The Mint for a long time. That's
stirred me to fetch it from the dusty shelf where it lives alongside
Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence's more famous book and give it a re-
    read.

Out of slightly morbid curiosity, and please say if it's none of my damn

I think I also knew 'Pete the Animal', if he was a Sussex student, or at
least someone closely matching the person in your article. We talked
Triumph now and again as he had a 500 at the same time I had my Tiger 650.
He always seemed slightly unhinged but we got on OK.

I posted about his demise a while back on ukrm.

He never really worked again after losing his teaching job. He was
doing some work at his house, and fell off a ladder or something, and
that was the end of him Sad.

    A fair description.
